MIDLAND, TX — After eight games so far this season, Midland and Lee find themselves sitting at opposite ends of the 2-6A district standings before their game this Friday night.
The #18 ranked Rebels are 8-0 and have had their best start to a season since winning three straight state championships from 1998-2000. Coincidentally, members of those teams will be honored before the game Friday as Midland ISD Hall of Legends inductees, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
Not to be outdone, Midland will have their 1973 and 2001 state championship baseball teams inducted in the Hall of Legends, as well.
That may be the only positive thing for the Bulldogs all night. MHS is 1-7 so far this year and will need a small miracle to make the postseason. They are 0-3 in the 2-6A district with losses to Tascosa, Frenship, and Permian. They will have to win their final two games and have Tascosa lose out in order to make it.
Neither are likely to happen.
Lee has been dominant this season. The Rebels have built off of last year’s 9-3 finish and put themselves in the state championship discussion. Whether or not they can hang with the Duncanville, Katy, and Allens of the state is yet to be seen, but they sure have made a case to be put in the discussion.
So far this season, the Rebels have outscored their opponents 463-166. They have scored at least 55 points in six of their games and have not been held to less than 35 once.
They have not played slouches, either. With dominant performances against 6-2 Montwood and 6-2 Frenship they are battle tested and proven.
Against perennial power Tascosa last week, Lee won 55-36 as they came one step closer to the district title. Quarterback Michael Serrano completed just over 50% of his passes on his way to 235 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the team in carries (20) and rushing yards (181).
Loic Fouonji, the immensely talented four-star wide receiver who has his eyes on Oklahoma State, used his 6’4” 195 pound frame to haul in three catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.
They are not short on talent and will likely run away with the game early on. The win will guarantee at least a share of the district title, and will set up a potential winner takes all game in Odessa against Permian on November 8. The Rebels would love to hoist to the trophy alone this year after splitting the honor with Tascosa and Permian in 2018.
The 59th edition of the Midland vs. Lee rivalry will kick off Friday night at Grande Stadium in Midland.
