MIDLAND, TX — Former Midland Lee star Tyrone Thurman will be inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame next May, the organization announced Tuesday.
Thurman, who played for the Rebels in the early 1980's, was a member of Lee's 1983 state champion runner-up team. During his senior season in 1984, the 5'3", 130 pound running back ran for 1,204 yards.
Despite his diminutive stature, Thurman earned a spot on the Texas Tech football team as a wide receiver and punt returner. Over his career as a Red Raider, Thurman returned four punts for touchdowns and had 1,270 receiving yards.
In 1988, his senior season, he was named to the Associated Press All-American team as a kick return specialist after averaging over 10 yards per punt return and over 23 yards per kickoff return.
He will be inducted as a decade of the 1980's honoree during a ceremony on May 2, 2020 at Baylor University’s Ferrell Center in Waco.
Eight other former players, coaches, and reporters will join him. Sealy High School, SMU, and NFL legend Eric Dickerson will be also be inducted along with Danny Amendola, Chad Morris, Charley Taylor, Chuck Dicus, David Warren, Dan Hooks, and Joe Martin.
