Undefeated Miles Falls at Home in Front of Silenced Crowd

MILES, TX — The Cross Plain Buffaloes tore up the the Miles’ defense early and often Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

Cross Plains scored every time they had the ball in the first half en route to an easy looking 35-6 halftime lead. Previously undefeated Miles had no answer for them.

The Bulldogs started off with the ball and quickly gave it to Cross Plains after a three and out. Senior quarterback Caleb Hernandez orchestrated a wonderful five minute long opening drive.  A couple good runs by Hernandez and running back Casen Conlee moved them past midfield.

Two quick passes to Hunter Johnson and Casen Allen advanced the ball further to the 33.  Hernandez followed that up with a deep strike to Allen along the right sideline.  Allen caught the ball around the 12, made a couple Miles’ players miss, and dove into the end zone for the early score.

Miles looked poised to tie the game after three straight runs by RB Brayden Dunlap and QB Davian Martinez put them across the 50.  The Cross Plains’ defense tightened up around the 30 yard line and forced a turnover on downs to give the ball back to the offense.

This time around, Hernandez took the first down snap and took off down the field.  He was taken down at the Miles’ 28, a 44 yard run.  Miles sniffed out a pair of runs to make it 3rd and 11 but jumped offside to make it a more manageable 3rd and 6.

Hernandez connected with Allen for twelve yards and first down. On the next play, Conlee made his way across the goal line to go up 14-0 with 2:06 left in the first quarter.

Miles moved the ball well on the next drive until a holding call put them behind the chains on first down.  The Bulldogs could not gain the necessary 20 yards and punted.

Allen broke the plane for his second score of the night to cap an eight play, 60 yard drive with 8 minutes to go in the half.

Down 21-0, Miles began its next drive at its 33, but a holding and illegal man downfield made it significantly tougher for them.  After getting the stop, Cross Plains got a finger on the punt and recovered it at its own 47.

Talented running back Cody McWilliams was given the ball on first down and broke a tackle attempt from practically every Miles’ defender on his way into the end zone. The 53 yard scamper made it 28-0.

Miles’ only scoring drive of the game came on the ensuing possession.  The Bulldogs started with great field position after a late hit on the kickoff put the ball on the Cross Plains’ 36.

Martinez connected with his big 6’3” receiver, Brandon Rodriguez, on a flag route.  Rodriguez ran to the two yard line before being dragged down.  The Buffaloes held strong at the goal line for three plays, but Martinez powered his way into the end zone on a quarterback sneak from the half yard line.

Cross Plains answered right back with another Allen touchdown just 36 seconds before halftime.

The score at the break was 35-6 Cross Plains.

The second half was just a formality in the grand scheme of things, but Miles continued to fight and stopped Cross Plains at the goal line on back to back possessions to start the half.  The first of which was a four play stand from its four yard line.

Hernandez was responsible for the only points of the second half.  He scored on a 4 yard scamper with a minute and a half to go in the third.

The final score was 42-6 in favor of the Buffaloes.

For Miles, this is its first loss of the season as they fall to 5-1 They will head to Menard to face the Yellojackets next week.

Cross Plains is now also 5-1 and will return home to face the struggling Haskell Indians.

Good home crowd for Miles and they do a swell job supporting the Bulldogs. However, by the fourth quarter, the Buffaloes had certainly ‘silenced’ the crowd. Not much to yell about down 42-6.
