Week 6 Concho Valley HS Football Preview

SAN ANGELO, TX — We are treated to some early football this week with Eldorado and Haskell kicking off at 7:00 on Thursday.  For most of our area teams, district play is in full swing and coaches and players are battling for their playoff lives.  Here's the rundown on whats going on this week in the Concho Valley football world.

Eldorado 4-1 vs. Haskell 2-3 (Thursday at 7:00)

Eldorado has won three games in a row after beating McCamey 62-32 at home.  Running backs Santiago Hernandez and Eric Reyes led the team with 93 and 92 yards, respectively.  Senior Jaakan Jurecek is one of the Eagles’ most important players due to his skill and versatility.  He is a dangerous weapon in pass rush and on defense in general. He is also a big, athletic body that quarterback Covarrubiaz looks for frequently.  Against McCamey, he made five grabs for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Haskell is 2-3 and lost to Lubbock Christian last week in a 52-13 blowout.  Haskell only managed 192 yards of total offense, and QB Cutter Medford completed just 37% of his 27 attempts.

*One important note, this is a neutral site, non district game and will be played in Winters.

SA Central 3-2 at Trinity 5-0 (Friday at 7:00)

Trinity might be Central’s toughest opponent of the season.  The Trojans are big. Really big. On the offensive line alone they tout three 400 pounders.  They maximize this size by handing the ball around to several different backs, mostly out of the power I formation.  This style of offense milks the clock and limits the number of possessions their opponents have. Central’s offense will have to be firing on all cylinders, because they won’t be able to afford scoreless drives.

Lake View 3-2 at Brownfield 1-4 (Friday at 7:00)

After starting 3-0, the Chiefs have dropped their last two in convincing fashion.  The defense has been the biggest red flag in the losing streak. They have allowed 101 points in the two losses compared to 76 in the three wins.  In last week’s game against now 4-1 Llano, they allowed 475 yards of total offense.

Brownfield will give them a chance to bounce back.  They average just under 16 points a game and have failed to slow down opposing offenses.  The all gas, no brakes Lake View offense should have no trouble outscoring them.

Ballinger 3-1 at Anson 2-2 (Friday at 7:30)

Ballinger lost its first game last week when Cisco came to town.  The Bearcats ended up losing by 17, but the game was closer than that score would appear.  Ballinger mistakes and turnovers gave Cisco the ball inside the Ballinger 40 on 3 of its 4 scoring drives, one started on the 6 after a blocked punt.  Ballinger will try to put those mistakes behind them when they travel to Anson.

The Tigers are 2-2, but the losses are against 5-0 Jim Ned and 10th ranked Hamlin.  Anson defeated Bangs 48-27 to become 1-0 in the district.

Grape Creek 1-3 vs. Bangs 2-2 (Friday at 7:30)

Both teams are coming off losses to district competition.  Grape Creek lost to Coleman 49-8, and Bangs lost to Anson 48-27.  In the Coleman game, Grape Creek allowed 313 rushing yards. Bangs relies heavily on its ground game as well, so the Eagle defense will have to step up in order to have a chance at winning.

TLCA 0-4 vs. Coleman 2-2 (Friday at 7:30)

The TLCA Eagles have had a very hard time putting any points on the board.  They average only 9 per game, and their season high is 12. Against Merkel on Friday, the final score was 41-6.  They are playing very hard but have not managed to turn the effort into wins as of yet. Success will come eventually, but this week’s matchup with Coleman will be another stiff challenge.  The Bluecats will try to move to 2-0 in the district after thumping Grape Creek last week.

Christoval 5-0 at Roscoe Collegiate 1-3 (Friday at 7:30)

Christoval got the better of now 3-2 Winters on Friday in a hard fought 34-24 victory.  QB Wilcox accounted for all five touchdowns (2 passing/3 rushing) and 385 total yards. Roscoe should not pose a significant threat for the unbeaten Cougars.  They did have an extra week to prepare after taking last week off. Against Miles three weeks ago, they allowed 314 rushing yards. Wilcox and company will be able to exploit that weakness in their defense en route to a 6-0 start.

Miles 5-0 vs. Cross Plains 4-1 (Friday at 7:30)

Miles outlasted Munday in a high scoring affair last week to keep the perfect season going.  QB Martinez led the way with 215 yards and a touchdown passing along with 154 yards and three touchdowns running.  Brayden Dunlap added 108 yards and two scores on 18 carries. Cross Plains’ only loss was to Christoval with a score of 26-14.  Every other outing they have dominated with an average point differential of 46.

Water Valley 3-2 vs. Paint Rock 1-4 (Friday at 7:30)

The Wildcats have suffered back to back losses after three wins to start the season.  Paint Rock recently snagged its first victory of the season two weeks ago versus Panther Creek.  Water Valley has a great opportunity to get back on the winning side on its home turf.

Wall (5-0), Sonora (2-3), and Mason (3-2) are all off this week with a bye.
