Week 2 Concho Valley HS Football Preview

SAN ANGELO, TX — Week 2 of high school football is sure to be a good one as area teams look to keep their winning streaks alive or turn things around.  Here is a look at some of the key matchups taking place in the Concho Valley this Friday night:

SA Central Bobcats vs. Del Rio Rams (Friday at 7:30)

The Bobcats and Rams are both looking for their first win of the season, and the front lines will play a major role in helping one of them pull it off.  Central’s defense, led by linemen Xy’Kerion Paulk and Bradey Allen, will hope to slow down the power running attack of Del Rio. QB Malachi Brown and the offense, meanwhile, will try to limit turnovers and penalties.  If they can, then they should have no trouble putting points on the board.

Lake View Chiefs at Fabens Wildcats (Friday at 7:00)

Coach Hector Guevara and his explosive offense will make the nearly six hour trek to Fabens in order to extend their win streak.  QB Albert Rodriguez and his bevy of receivers will be flying around the field trying to hand Fabens its first loss. The Wildcats have their share of athletes, as well, led by twin phenoms Victor and Hector Escajeda.

Eldorado Eagles at Winters Blizzards (Friday at 7:30)

Our game of the week will take place in Winters, Texas.  Winters went 8-4 in 2018 and won last week in a shutout of Goldthwaite.  Eldorado defeated TLCA 47-6 in a dominant performance from the Eagles. QB Kevan Covarrubiaz is back from an ACL injury that caused him to miss most of last season.  Look for running back Eric Reyes to have a big night behind a physically imposing offensive line.

Grape Creek Eagles at Christoval Cougars (Friday at 7:30)

What Grape Creek lacks in size they make up for in athleticism, and head Coach Tanner Thiel is looking to capitalize on it.  After falling to 0-1 last week, his team will face a stacked Christoval squad that blew out Harper 40-0. The Cougars have nine returning starters on each side of the ball from an 8-4 showing in 2018, and QB Brayden Wilcox is already gearing up for a monster 2019.

Wall Hawks at Cisco Loboes (Friday at 7:30)

Wall is coming off an unexpected drubbing of Mason last Thursday and will travel to Cisco to play the Loboes.  Wall will be without running back Cinch Dickey, but still has a stable of backs to carry the load. Cisco defeated Sweetwater in its opener 49-27 and is looking to build off a 9-1 record last year.

Mason Punchers at Johnson City Eagles (Friday at 7:30)

First year head coach Mike McLeod is looking to put last week’s game against Wall behind him and take his Punchers back to the playoffs.  3A Johnson City only finished 2-9 last season and lost in week 1 to a very good San Saba team 55-3. Both teams are looking to turn the corner and make a statement on Friday.

Ballinger Bearcats at Reagan County Owls (Friday at 7:30)

Ballinger is coming off a tight contest against Brady that ended 26-22 in favor of the Bearcats.  16 starters returned from last year, and Coach Chuck Lipsey is looking to get the most out of this experience.  As for Reagan County, sophomores Sebastian Sandoval, QB, and Alex Sosa, RB, are a fearsome backfield duo that paved the way for the Owls as freshmen last year.  Reagan County lost to Stanton 20-12 last Friday.

Water Valley Wildcats at Veribest Falcons (Friday at 7:30)

Water Valley made a strong case for themselves last week beating Robert Lee 53-8.  Coach Nathan Hayes' newly inherited team relied on underclassmen last season and finished 4-6. Things are coming together this year, however, and quarterback Gabe Smith will help keep the momentum going.  Veribest also went 4-6 last season and defeated Rule in a high scoring affair 52-40. The Falcons are relying on fresh faces in 2019 with only 2 returning starters.

Sonora Broncos at Lamesa Tornadoes (Friday at 7:00)

Sonora has changed offensive approaches and will rely on its run game in 2019 behind Brock Aschenbeck and Wilson Johnson.  The Broncos defeated Ozona 33-13 on Friday and will take their 1-0 record to Lamesa. The Tornadoes lost in San Angelo last week to Lake View after a furious second half comeback fell just short in the waning seconds of the game.

TLCA Eagles vs. Miles Bulldogs (Friday at 7:30)

Miles is led by athletic quarterback Davian Martinez and is looking to prove football fans across Texas wrong this season.  After finishing 7-4 last season, Dave Campbell picked them to finish third in a five team district. The Bulldogs are off to a hot start beating Ranger 58-6 in week 1.  TLCA is looking to rebound off a 47-6 loss to Eldorado behind senior running back J.R. Wilson.
