Shoemaker Speed Too Much for Dysfunctional San Angelo Central

KILLEEN, TX — Turnovers were the story early for the Central Bobcats when they took on the Shoemaker Grey Wolves in Leo Buckley Stadium on Friday.  Central started with a punt on its first possession and followed that with a stop of its own.  From there on out it was all Shoemaker.

Central muffed the punt return on the two yard line which set up an easy touchdown pass from Shoemaker quarterback Ty Bell on the next play.  The Bobcats looked ready to tie the game at 7 until junior QB Malachi Brown sailed a pass over the head of a crossing receiver and into the hands of a waiting Shoemaker defender.

Central’s defense responded with a red zone interception of its own before once again being forced to punt.  Bell led an impressive drive down the field and capped it off by going back to the fade route that was intercepted on the previous possession.  This time 6’3” wide receiver Trent Hudson pulled it in over the outstretched arms of a Central defender making it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Brown threw another interception on the first play of the second quarter giving Shoemaker great field position once again.  They would punch it in two plays later.

A lone bright spot for the Bobcats was senior wideout Tanner Dabbert who hauled in three touchdown receptions on the night.  The first came in the second quarter on a pretty 33 yard back shoulder throw from Brown to make it 20-7.

The teams traded punts until Shoemaker tossed a screen to wide receiver De’Andre Oxford who turned on the jets for a 53 yard touchdown. Bell threw it up to Hudson to convert the two point conversion.

Central showed promise on the next drive but an interception on 4th and 2 from the Shoemaker 5 yard line ended all hope of closing the deficit before half.

Central came back out and forced a punt that lead to a 29 yard touchdown reception for Dabbert, but the defense could not make back to back stops and was gashed up the middle for a 38 yarder followed by a 27 yard touchdown run by running back Devin Brown.

The rest of the game was much of the same.  Central looked lost and racked up the penalties and mental errors which cut drives short for its offense while extending possessions for its opponent.

Shoemaker never took their foot off the gas and scored a couple of late touchdowns to punctuate things.

The final score was Shoemaker Grey Wolves 54, Central Bobcats 21.
