AUSTIN, TX -- The San Angelo Central Bobcats' and Brady Bulldogs' 7-on-7 football teams clinched a state tournament berth on Friday.
The Bobcats are competing at the Austin Westlake Division I state qualifying tournament and advanced past pool play. In the state qualifying round, as reported by Dave Campbell's Texas Football's Matt Stepp, Central beat Copperas Cove 38-33 to secure their spot in College Station.
Central is the second area team to qualify for the state tournament this year. It's their first appearance since 2017.
Brady clinched their spot at the Abilene Division III tournament hosted at McMurry University.
The Ballinger Bearcats (DIII) were the first team to qualify from the area on May 25. It's their first appearance at the state tournament since 2015, when they competed as a division II team.
Two more spots from the area are open this Saturday at the Sonora SQT, which will feature Alpine, Ballinger, Brady, Junction, Ozona, Sonora and Wink. Alpine and Wink, along with Ballinger and Brady, have qualified for the state tournament already, meaning they cannot advance past pool play.
The state tournament is June 27-29 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
