ABILENE, TX -- It wasn't pretty, but the no. 1-ranked Wall Hawks sweated out a 3-2 win over rival no. 12 Brock in the first game of their Class 3A Region I final series at Abilene Christian University on Thursday.
"That's what a regional final baseball game is right there. ... I wouldn't say we gave our best effort at the plate today," Wall head coach Jason Schniers said. "Our kids dug deep for that one and we had to hold them off at the end."
Mascorro put Wall on top with a 2-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning. That came after back-to-back doubles from Gage Weishuhn and Jake Jansa. Jansa scored Weishuhn to tie the game at 1-1.
Mascorro was simply looking to put the ball in play and didn't realize it was going over the fence.
"My job in that situation was just to get (Jake) in," Mascorro said. "I was trying to get something deep in the outfield so it wouldn't be too hard to get in. I got around second base and I heard everyone in the stands screaming."
Brock had taken the lead in the first inning after Cooper Allen came home on a sacrifice bunt by Jase Lopez.
Caleb Heuertz was dominant on the mound, going six innings and allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts to pick up the win. The junior didn’t allow a hit until the third inning.
"He settled in and he was Caleb," Schniers said. "He did what he's done all year long."
Ryan Gully earned the save with a scoreless inning of work where he allowed one hit.
Jansa led the way for the Hawks' offense with the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a pair of doubles to his name. Mascorro was the only Hawk with multiple RBIs, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Wall (36-0) will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. If Brock were to win game two, a decisive game three would follow 30 minutes following the scheduled game two.
