Sonora's Immel Moving on to Same Position at Mason

MASON, TX -- The Mason Puncher baseball team will have a new skipper come 2020 after a school board vote approved to hire former Sonora Bronco head coach Jay Immel on Tuesday.

Immel confirmed the news to San Angelo LIVE! Tuesday night after the vote.

The move comes after 10 years at Sonora, and the last two as head coach of the Broncos. Immel led the Broncos to a playoff berth in 2019 and a play-in game with TLCA in his first season.

Sonora finished the year 14-10 overall.

The position at Mason opened up after current head baseball coach Michael McLeod accepted the role as Mason's AD and head football coach. Immel said he will serve as a position coach on McLeod's staff.

McLeod currently has the Punchers back to the Regional Semifinals for the second straight year. They will face Dallardsville Big Sandy this Thursday in Cameron. Big Sandy knocked the Punchers out of the playoffs last season.

This is a developing story.
