Baseball Playoff Pairings: Wall and Mason Remain as Only Area Teams Left

 

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Only two area teams remain in the Texas high school baseball playoffs entering the regional quarterfinals this week.

No. 1-ranked Wall Hawks swept Amarillo River Road with ease by a combined score of 33-1 in their two games. Both games ended in the fifth inning thanks to the run rule.

Caleb Heuertz finished the series a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate with seven RBIs and four runs scored. Luke Young picked up the win in game one and Heuertz picked up the win in game two.

The Mason Punchers also completed a sweep of their own against Riviera Kaufer. The Punchers won game one 11-1 and game two 8-3. Mason used a five-run fifth inning to break the 3-3 tie. Kyle Montoya picked up the win in five innings of work in the second game.

Otto Wofford was dominant in his start in game one, striking out seven and not allowing a hit in five innings of work before throwing two perfect frames with four strikeouts in a relief appearance in game two. He also went 2-for-5 at the plate in game one with an RBI and two runs scored. He finished the double header 4-for-9.

Conner Leifeste was 3-for-6 at the plate in the series with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored as well.

The Central Bobcats won their first game of a best-of-three series with Odessa High before the Bronchos swept a double header to knock the Bobcats out of the playoffs.

Brady, Eldorado, Ozona and Reagan County were swept out of the playoffs in the area round.

Here are the pairings for the regional quarterfinal round: 

Class 3A

  • Wall (31-0) vs Alpine (17-8): Game 1: May 17, 6:00 p.m.; Game 2: May 18, 12:00 p.m.; Game 3 (if nec.): 30 minutes after game 2. Christensen Stadium, Midland.

Class 2A

  • Mason (15-6) vs Brackettville (17-11): May 17, 7:30 p.m., at Converse Judson; Game 2: May 18, 12:00 p.m., Jake Insleman Field; Game 3 (if needed): 30 minutes after game 2.
