STATE TRACK MEET: Junction's Lumpkins Follows Family Footsteps with Pair of Silver Medals

AUSTIN, TX -- Junction senior Kyle Lumpkins comes from a track lineage -- his father competed in the sport and his sister won state and national titles between high school and college at Angelo State.

He has one thing his sister never got from Austin, though -- silver medals from hurdles. On Saturday, Lumpkins took home silver medals in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles with personal records (14.47 and 38.72) in each event.

"It's good. My sister, in high school, never got anything better than a bronze medal in hurdles," Lumpkins joked.

The senior had to go up against future Texas Tech track runner Cale Kassen, of Valley View, who set a new conference meet record in the 110. Being around that competition was something that fueled Lumpkins to go out with a bang after finishing fifth in high jump earlier in the day.

"It's great, because he's gonna run at Texas Tech," Lumpkins said. "It's cool to run against a good athlete like that."

Junction's Quentin Schulze also medaled in pole vault earlier in the day.

A Star Shines Brighter

A crowd of 25,858 people flocked to Mike Meyers Stadium on Saturday for the second day of the UIL State Track Meet and to watch one of the most popular high school athletes of all time in Houston Strake Jesuit's Matthew Boling.

Boling was competing in the Class 6A boy's 4x100-meter relay, 100-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay. Boling set a new national record in the 100-meter dash before then running a 44-second split in the mile relay to send Jesuit to the top of the podium in the event. The University of Georgia signee also set a new national record in the 100 with a time of 10.13 seconds.

Boling fed off the energy from the crowd, he told a swarm of reporters after the relay. He gained a massive following over the season, especially after running a 9.98-second 100 at regionals two weeks ago.

Christoval's Vaughn Surges Late to Claim Silver

Christoval's Allison Vaughn needed a late kick and got it to take home her first ever medal, a silver, at the UIL state track meet.

The sophomore ran a personal and school record time of 2 minutes, 21.17 seconds to claim gold. She was out of the running of a podium finish heading into the final 100 meters.

"I feel really good," Vaughn said. "Everything we worked for paid off by getting to step on that medal stand."

Vaughn knew she still had an ace up her sleeve heading into the home stretch.

"I knew it was that close and I knew we were all right there," Vaughn said. "You could end up second or you could end up fourth. I knew I had to finish the race."

Vaughn qualified for the state meet as a wildcard, the fastest third place finisher in the state. Vaughn says she's anything but a wildcard now.

"It felt good to prove myself coming in as the wildcard," Vaughn said. "It's nothing you can take for granted. Anything's possible."

Notables:

Mason freshman Tristin Keller finished fifth in her state debut in pole vault with a jump of 10-6. Tad Kirby and Ana Segura each won gold. Segura in the mile and Kirby in the 200-meter dash. Mason's 4x400 relay team of Kirby, Carlos Watson, Otto Wofford and Ethan Powell finished third thanks to 

Miles' Skyler Brooks scored points in long jump with a sixth place finish. Brooks finished the day with a jump of 16-7.25. She finished fourth in the 100-meter with a time of 12.53.

The latest result is from the 2A boy's shot put. Winters' Hunter Duggan finished fifth with a personal record throw of 49-8.00.

Rain started to come down just after 11:00 a.m. and got worse, forcing officials to bring a temporary halt to the meet.

The meet had been delayed with a round of thunderstorms slamming Austin. Mike A. Meyers Stadium was evacuated due to lightning in the area. After an hour, the track opened back up for competitors and the field events resumed on a rolling schedule. .
