ABILENE, TX -- An explosive Fort Worth Richland team took down the San Angelo Central Lady Cats 16-6 in six innings at Abilene Christian University's Wells Field on Monday.
Richland used an explosive first two innings to take a 9-3 lead into the third. Abby DeSanto kicked off the scoring with a leadoff home run in the first inning to spark a three-run first inning. The Rebels would then score six runs on seven hits and three errors to take a commanding lead.
After falling down 10-3 in the bottom of the third, the Lady Cats would struggle to bring runners home and stranded four batters in the fourth and fifth innings. They would plate two runs to keep hope alive at 13-6 before Richland plated three more in the bottom of the sixth inning.
"Overall, we seemed very hesitant today," Central head coach David Millsap said. "I don't know if it was nerves. I don't know if it was a different field, playing on turf. Whatever it was, we were playing hesitant and not letting our instincts take over.
Kaya Howell finished 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Alli Talamantes took the loss.
For the young Lady Cats, this experience will prove valuable down the line in Millsap's eyes.
"We're young. We're really young," Millsap emphasized. "We've got lots of freshmen and sophomore starters. ... We just don't have that experience. At any point after the second inning, we could've laid down. That experience is gonna help us down the road."
Central finishes the season 12-15-1.
