AREA SOFTBALL: Sonora Snags First District Win in Wild Clash with TLCA

SONORA, TX -- The Sonora Lady Broncos downed the TLCA Lady Eagles 17-14 on Thursday in a game that saw five lead changes. It is Sonora's first district win of the year.

TLCA jumped out in front in the first inning, scoring five runs off Sonora's Aislin Nixon and forcing the starter to leave the circle without registering an out.

Sonora responded with six runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Shyanne Gamez and Sianne Alviso to tie the game. Cheyenne Haynes would give the Lady Broncos a 6-5 lead one batter later with an RBI single.

McKenna Manley gave the Lady Eagles the lead right back in the second with her two-run home run to center field. That lead would be extended with an RBI double and single in succession in the third.

Back-to-back RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk would cap off a four-run third inning and put Sonora up 10-9 entering the fourth.

Tyrah Atchison drove in two runs on a double the very next inning to put TLCA back on top. She would later come around on a fielder's choice to put the Lady Eagles up 12-10. They would eventually take a 13-10 lead to the bottom of the inning after all was said and done.

Sonora clawed back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to move within one run. Brae Harris would tie the game with an RBI single in the sixth before Sky Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Lady Broncos up 14-13.

Sonora didn't give up the lead from there.

Alviso got the win in the circle for the Lady Broncos, going seven innings and allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits and five walks with a pair of strikeouts. She also went 1-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and a run scored.

Gamez would go 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Sonora. Hernandez and Brae Harris each had a multi-RBI game.

Mattie Coxwell picked up the loss for TLCA after two-thirds of an inning where she allowed five runs on one hit. Manley started in the circle and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 12 runs on 10 hits.

Manley also went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Griggs finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Sonora (4-12, 1-4) will close out their first round of district play at Brady on Tuesday. TLCA (5-16, 1-3) hosts Grape Creek on Tuesday.
