Jayton Ends Irion County's Cinderella Run in Regional Final

 

ABILENE, TX -- It was a fight till the end and tough loss for the Irion County Hornets as they were beaten by the Jayton Jaybirds 47-32 on Saturday, March 2nd. 

The Jaybirds started in a man defense against the Hornets stealing the ball and scoring first. 

 Irion County put pressure on the Jaybirds to turn the ball over and score right after the Jaybirds. 

Dawson Sparks was a hidden back side post for the Hornets, which gave the Hornets a lead on the Jaybirds. 

The score stayed close as Jayton’s Aaron Hernandez tied the game with his free throws. 

However, Irion County wouldn’t let the Jaybirds have the lead for long, as they continued to find the open spots on the floor and kept the lead ending the first quarter 14-10.

Both teams were in foul trouble which kept the score tight, but the Jaybirds took advantage of Irion County's turnovers and caught up, then eventually took the lead ending the second quarter 22-17. 

At the start of the third quarter, Irion County goes into a Zone defense to protect the basket.

However it’s not enough as the Jaybirds continued to attack the glass gaining a 10 point lead ending the third 32-22

Jayton tried to run out the clock and Irion County got into foul trouble, helping the Jaybirds extend their lead ending the fourth quarter 47-32. 

Mo Marrow and Dawson Sparks were the only Hornets to hit double digits. Marrow scored 11 points and Sparks finished with 10.

As were Arron Hernandez and Tye Scoggin for the Jaybirds and tallied up 14 point each for Jayton. 

The Jaybirds will now advance to the State Tournament in San Antonio.
