BOYS HOOPS PLAYOFFS: Veribest, Wall Open Playoffs with Win; Brady Falls

SAN ANGELO, TX – Jordan Ryne scored a team high 17 points which included a trifecta of dunks to lead the Crane Golden Cranes to a 74-45 win over the Brady Bulldogs in the Bi-District round of the Class 3A boys basketball playoffs on Tuesday night at Lake View High School.

The Golden Cranes used a stingy press defense that fueled a 16-2 run to open the game in which Crane never looked back. “Any time you can get a fast start in a playoff game it’s pretty vital,” said Crane head coach Chris Suttle. “We kinda preach that. If we get after it on the defensive end it will lead to some easy buckets for us and maybe a little less work on the offensive end.

Crane moved to 24-3 on the season while extending it’s winning streak to 11 games. “It’s great coming into the playoffs hot like this,” said senior forward Jordan Ryne. “We just got to keep it going and got to stay focused.”

Like Brady’s season, the Bulldogs never stopped fighting despite trailing 38-12 at the half. “We started district with four wins on the season,” said Brady head coach Jeff Holland. “I just told them guys we have to keep chipping away at it. Eventually those wins are going to come. I said once we get to district we’ll be fine. They stepped up. I’m really proud of my guys. They played their butts off all season long and just stuck with it.”

Brady’s season comes to an end at 10-20 while Crane moves on to the area round. The Golden Cranes will take on Brownfield who took care of Bushland on Tuesday night 67-50.

Veribest Stings Yellowjackets Despite Delay

- by Mariana Watson

As the Veribest and Menard game was about to start, the lights went out in the Coleman gym, causing a delay in the game.

However the delay did not stop the Veribest Falcons as they took out the Menard Yellowjackets in a 44-52 victory.

Veribest started the first quarter in a tough man defense. They fought for the ball and scored first against the Yellowjackets. However, Mendard's Rito Lozano hit two consecutive three-pointers for the Yellowjackets for an 18-11 after the first quarter.

The Falcons continued to put pressure on the Yellowjackets in a full court press but got into foul trouble. The Yellowjackets out rebounded the Falcons which resulted them to extend their lead ending the first half 30-19.

At the start of the second half, Veribest’s Dominic Herrera sparked a rally for the Falcons with three consecutive threes, helping the Falcons to catch up to Menard.

The Falcons aggressive defense helped with multiple steals and scores as they continued to catch up to the Yellowjackets and tie the game 32-32 in the third quarter.

The Falcons pushed the ball down the floor and eventually past the Yellowjackets to outscore them 20-6 ending the third quarter 39-36.

It was a fight till the end, as both teams went into man-to-man defense to intercept the ball, which kept the score close throughout the fourth quarter.

Towards the end of the fourth Menard got into some foul trouble which helped the Falcons extend their lead.

Falcons continued to make smart ball movements and again outscored the Yellowjackets 13-8 ending the game 44-52.

Veribest’s Dominic Herrera was the leading scorer with 20 points.

Hayden Barnes and Zach Bolin both scored eight points each for Veribest.

Veribest will face Fort Davis in the area round of playoffs.
