VALERA, TX -- The Robert Lee Lady Steers are bi-district champions after dominating the Menard Lady Yellowjackets 60-26 on Tuesday.
From the beginning, the Lady Steers were able to make shots from all around the court. Kaylee Puentes had two three-pointers and eight points total. The Lady Steers also played stellar defense by only allowing one basket. This brought the score at the end of the the first quarter 16-2.
The second quarter for the Lady Yellowjackets was a little better, but not good enough. The Lady Steers outscored Menard 11-7 in the quarter. Puentes made another three in the quarter, giving them the lead at half 27-9.
The Lady Steers came out bucking after halftime. They scored 21 points in the quarter by getting looks from just about everywhere on the court. After the third consecutive single-point quarter, the score was 48-16.
The fourth quarter was filled with bench play as the Robert Lee Lady Steers coasted to victory.
Puentez's hot hand gave her the game-high mark of 20 points. Braylee Hood wasn't far behind with 18. Kelby Clawson was the only other Lady Steer in double figures with 14 points.
Jalyn Montes, Morgan Wagner and Haleigh Cutrer each had six points for Menard.
Robert Lee will face Rankin this Friday in the area round of playoffs at Big Spring's Dorothey Garrett Coliseum.
Harris Helps Sonora to First Playoff Win in Four Years
The Sonora Lady Broncos won their first playoff game in four years with a 40-22 win over Presidio on Tuesday thanks to the help of their sophomore forward.
Sophomore Skylar Harris made 38 percent of her 16 shots from the field to help Sonora to their first playoff win under new head coach Clayton Harris.
But it was defense that helped Sonora take control in the first quarter. The Lady Broncos held Presidio scoreless in the first to take a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.
Then the Lady Broncos found their rhythm and exploded for 15 points to take a 22-7 lead at halftime.
Sonora continued that scoring trend with another 15 points in the third quarter to move ahead 37-11.
However, Presidio tried to make a run in the fourth quarter. The Lady Blue Devils outscored Sonora 11-3 in the final period, but the deficit was too large.
Skylar Harris finished with a team-high of 16 points. The sophomore also finished with five rebounds and six assists.
Brae Harris was a monster on the boards for the Lady Broncos. Harris racked up 13 total rebounds for Sonora to go with her seven points.
Sonora (26-7) will face no. 3-ranked Idalou in the area round this Thursday in Colorado City.
No. 2 Mason Cruises Past Bi-District Round
The no. 2-ranked Mason Cowgirls easily dispatched a young San Antonio Stacey team 85-18 at Schreiner University on Tuesday to keep their win streak going.
The Cowgirls had control from the tip-off, exploding to a 29-3 lead behind 16 points from Ruby Mangus.
Mason then went on a 21-0 run in the second quarter to take a 50-3 lead into halftime. Sophomore McKenzie Cano highlighted another explosive quarter with 10 points.
The Cowgirls, led by Courtney Hanscheck, continued to dominate by outscoring Stacey 15-5 in the third quarter. Hanscheck finished with six points in the period.
Mason closed out the game with 20 points in the fourth quarter. Sterling Smith and Lauren Olsen each finished with four points in the period.
Mangus took home the high mark of 18 points. Cano also finished in double figures with 14 points.
Mason (34-1) extends their win streak to 27 games. They'll face the winner of the Milano-Normagee game in the area round.
No. 1 Wall Continues Dominant Streak
The no. 1-ranked Wall Lady Hawks dominated the Crane Lady Birds 91-8 for the bi-district championship on Monday.
Wall started out strong by putting pressure on the Lady Birds causing them to struggle to get the ball down the court.
With Wall's combination of aggressive defense and good ball movement, they were able to score first and continued to extend their lead.
The majority of The Lady Hawks points were from steals and driving the ball down the court. This kept the Lady Birds from scoring ending the first quarter 28-0.
The Lady Birds were able to score in the second quarter;however, Wall continued to play off Cranes mistakes as they extended the lead ending the first half 54-3.
Wall started the third quarter with the same aggression that they had in the first half. Reynolds started off the Lady Hawks by making two consecutive threes. The rest of the Lady Hawks held the Lady birds with a strong man defense.
Crane goes from a zone defense to a man putting pressure on the Wall Hawks ending the score 74-4.
Cranes defense wasn’t enough as the Lady Hawks continued to steal the ball and extend the lead ending the game 91-8.
Reynolds was the leading scorer for the Lady Hawks with 16 points.
Rocha also hit double digits for the Lady Hawks with 15 points. Palmore and Lloyd each scored 10 points for Wall.
Wall (28-1) will face the winner of the Canadian-Denver City game in the area round.
Christoval Girls Cruise to Area Round in Defensive Game
The Christoval Cougars beat the Roscoe Plowgirls 35-23 for the bi-district championship on Tuesday.
As the Cougars took their lead mid-way through the first, the Plowgirls were unable to produce offensively. That allowed Christoval to hold a four-point lead on Roscoe to finish the first quarter.
The Plowgirls would start their second quarter trailing the Cougars 10-6 after back to back turnovers on offense from both teams.
Roscoe’s Bonnie Wilkinson would hit the only point made in the second quarter with a wide open three-pointer to pull the Plowgirls back into contention with the Cougars midway through the second quarter.
After a scoreless second quarter, Christoval’s Graci Jones got hot with a pair of wide open threes early on in the third. As a team, the Lady Cougars would rack up 15 points to add to their lead while holding the Plowgirls to just six points throughout the third, and taking a 25-15 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
After a 10-8 run in the fourth the Lady Cougars would pull away with the victory over the Plowgirls and their fifth straight year to advance past the first round of playoffs.
Christoval (23-10) will face Smyer this Thursday in the area round at Sands High School.
Lady Cats Knocked Out of Playoffs
The Central Lady Cats were knocked out of the playoffs Monday against the Arlington Martin Warriors. The lack of offense by the Lady Cats resulted in a 34-25 loss.
The Lady Cats came out and played great defense in the first quarter. They were able to only allow two field goals, but the offensive struggles were apparent all night.
“We really struggled shooting the ball,” said Coach Landon Dyer.
The game was tied at the end of the first 6-6.
Centrals offense continued to struggle throughout the second quarter. Parris Parmer had the only basket in the quarter.
The Warriors couldn’t score easily of the Lady Cats though. “We tried to switch things up,” said Dyer. “We ran some trap zones and forced a lot of turnovers.”
The Lady Cats trailed at the half 13-8.
The Warriors came out aggressive after the half. They weren’t able to pound the ball inside, but the real game changer was when Parmer went out after a questionable no-call block. They went on a 5-0 run during Parmer’s absence.
When Parmer did return she was able to hit a three-pointer, a steal, and then an assist. They trailed going into the third quarter 24-14.
The trap zone caused a lot of trouble for the warriors late. They kept turning the ball over, but central failed to convert on a majority of the chances.
“The man on man press really had us out of rhythm,” said Dyer. “We did get to the hole but didn’t finish.”
The Lady Cats ended up falling to the Warriors 34-25.
Parris Parmer had nine points.
