SAN ANGELO, TX -- Jevon Everitt had a stellar night to help the TLCA Eagles to a 75-34 win over Grape Creek on Friday.
Harrison Ragan and Isaac Gonzales started off hot for TLCA in the first quarter. The duo combined for 18 points to help TLCA to a 26-11 lead after the first quarter.
Everitt then got hot in the second quarter, scoring nine points to help TLCA extend their lead to 51-16 entering halftime.
TLCA then went got relatively cool, only scoring 11 points in the third quarter. However, by allowing just five points, TLCA's lead grew to 62-21.
Everitt would score another six points to highlight a 13-point fourth quarter for TLCA.
Everitt finished the game with 25 points. Ragan and Gonzales each had 15 points.
TLCA (20-4, 7-1) will travel to Ballinger on Feb. 5 looking to keep their hold on second place.
Robert Lee Inches Closer to Playoff Berth, Keeps District Title Hopes Alive
The Robert Lee Steers took control of the game early against the Sterling City Eagles for a 55-47 win.
The first quarter was neck and neck. Both teams played good defense, but Robert Lee's Julian Gamboa seven points put the Steers on top 11-9.
Both teams scored the ball more in the second quarter. Sterling City moved the ball and six different players were able to score. The Steers on the other hand fed Manny Gamboa. He had six points in the quarter and increased their lead to 28-25.
Robert Lee really took over the game coming out of halftime. They scored twice as many points as the Eagles. Robert Lee had multiple people with multiple baskets and it all came from defense. They led going into the fourth 46-34.
The lead that the Steers made seemed impenetrable, and it was. The Eagles out scored the Steers in the fourth 13-9. It wasn't enough though as the Steers win 55-47.
Julian Gamboa had 20 points.
Cross Knittel had 13 points.
Robert Lee moves to 9-1 in District 11-1A. They'll host district unbeaten Irion County on Feb. 5.
Sterling City next travels to Veribest on Feb. 8.
Mason Gains Control of First Place Over Junction
The Mason Punchers needed a big second quarter to lift them to a 48-29 win over Junction and sole possession of first place in District 27-2A on Friday.
Mason and Junction stayed close in the first quarter, with the Punchers holding a narrow 7-4 lead entering the second quarter.
Then the Punchers exploded for 20 points in the second half to jump ahead 27-11 entering halftime.
From there, Mason held Junction to 18 points in the second half to secure the win and sole possession of first place.
Otto Wofford led the way for the Punchers with 11 points. Tyson Keller had a stellar night from behind the arc with three three-pointers for his nine points.
Collin Wallace led the way for Junction with nine points.
Mason moves to 4-1 while Junction falls to 3-2.
Mason will travel to Center Point on Feb. 5.
Junction will host Harper on Feb. 5.
Veribest Outlasts Water Valley
Hot starts from the Water Valley Wildcats and Veribest Falcons ended in a 55-46 win for Veribest.
Veribest’s Compton would allot for 12 of the Falcons 16 points alongside Herrera’s four points throughout the first. However, the Wildcats weren’t far behind Veribest, ending their first quarter with 14 team points.
To start the second quarter Water Valley was down by two, and looked to their defense to stop Veribest’s offense from getting further ahead. Water Valley’s Hunter Davis would step up in the second by getting six points of his team's seven in the second. As the second quarter came to an end, the Falcons pulled ahead to take a 28-27 lead going into halftime after a short 5-2 run.
As the third quarter began, Veribest’s offense would work together to combine for 15 points against the Wildcats 10 points. After a few turnovers and a couple of missed opportunities, the Wildcats looked to the fourth quarter to fight back against the Falcons.
To begin the fourth quarter, the Falcons were up 43-36 on the Wild Cats, and were looking to take the lead and run with it.
After a couple of fouls from the Wildcats, the Falcons were able to pull away with their lead midway through the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats didn’t give up, and fought to keep the Falcons from getting a double digit lead late in the fourth. At the end of regulation the Veribest Falcons were able to outlast Water Valley.
Veribest will host Blackwell on Feb. 5. Water Valley will host Blackwell on Feb. 8.
