AREA GIRLS HOOPS: Central in Playoffs Behind Walker's Offensive Showcase; Robert Lee Bests No. 20 Veribest in Thriller

 

SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Central Lady Bobcats clinched a playoff spot with a dominant 40-19 win over the Weatherford Lady Kangaroos and some help on Tuesday.

The Lady Cats started out hot with Morgan Walker hitting two three-pointers to lift Central to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady 'Roos struggled against the Lady Cats tough defense. They only managed to score two points. The score at halftime was 20-4. 

Coming out of the half, the Lady 'Roos played better defense by going into a zone. Central still held onto the lead at the end of the third with the score being 25-11. 

The Lady Cats made up for their third quarter struggle by Walker finishing with another two three-pointers. 

Walker had 15 points and they all came from behind the arc.

Central (24-6, 7-1) clinched a playoff spot after Euless Trinity lost 57-37 to Hurst Bell. The Lady Cats will travel to Trinity this Friday, Jan. 25.

Hood Leads Robert Lee in Thrilling Triple OT Upset of No. 20 Veribest

The Robert Lee Lady Steers took down no. 20-ranked Veribest 64-63 at home in a triple overtime classic on Tuesday.

The game featured six players in double figure scoring.

Veribest took a 16-9 lead after the first quarter thanks to Kennadi Wheeless, Zoe Bratcher and Chloe Herrera each scoring four points. That lead would grow to 34-25 at the half behind seven points from Catlyn Ward and another six from Herrera.

After halftime, Robert Lee clamped down on the Lady Falcons. The Lady Steers set about cutting into Veribest's lead by outscoring the Lady Falcons 11-7 in the third thanks to four points from Braylee Hood and three from Kaylee Puentez.

That scoring trend would continue in the fourth, as Hood and Puentez combined for Robert Lee's nine fourth quarter points to tie the game at 45.

Hood would hit a three-pointer and Bratcher notched four points in the first overtime as the two teams matched each other with eight points to bring the score to 53-53.

Ward and Bratcher combined for four points as each team played more defensively to hold the deadlock at 57-57.

Four points from Julissa Ureno and another two from Hood would give Robert Lee just enough wiggle room to escape with the win in the third overtime.

Hood finished with the game-high mark of 21 points. Puentez was second on the Lady Steers' score sheet with 15 points. Kelby Clawson also had 10 points.

Ward finished with 18 points for Veribest. Herrera had 12 points after the dust settled. Bratcher finished with 10 points.

Robert Lee (19-4, 6-2) now moves just a half-game back of Veribest in the District 11-1A standings. The Lady Steers will travel to Water Valley this Friday with hopes of clinching a playoff berth.

Veribest (18-6, 7-2) will host Bronte this Friday looking to clinch a playoff spot.

No. 1 Wall Maintains Unbeaten District Run in Win Over Sonora

The top-ranked Wall Lady Hawks continued their undefeated district run with a convincing 70-36. win against the Sonora Lady Broncos.

The first quarter was quite competitive, regardless of the final score. Sawyer Lloyd got things started early with seven first quarter points to grab an early 20-13 lead. 

The defense in this game for Wall slowly squeezed the life out of Sonora, as they scored less and less throughout the game. Mary Kyle Johnson kept the Lady Broncos in the game early as she started the first game by scoring eight first half points.

Wall led 35-23 at halftime.

The Lady Broncos third quarter was tough. They only scored one basket, as for Wall they kept the normal pace by giving Lloyd the ball, her scoring, and them playing stellar defense. They extended their lead to 46-26.

Wall continued their scoring ways in the fourth quarter by draining four three-pointers. Landry Reynolds had two of those four.

Lloyd had the game-high 21 points. Sam Rocha finished as the only other Lady Hawk in double figures with 13 points. 

Mary Kyle Johnson had 10 points for Sonora.

Wall (23-1, 9-0) will host Grape Creek on Friday.

Sonora (22-7, 5-4) will travel to Reagan County on Friday.

Christoval Clinches Playoffs Behind Their Baker's Dozen, Eldorado's Help

The Christoval Lady Cougars routed the Winters Lady Blizzards 56-15 on Tuesday.

From the tip off the Lady Cougars were in control of the game. They dominated on defense holding then to only three points. The score at the end of the first was 17-3.

The Lady Cougars played a physical style offense getting to the line as often as possible and converting nine out of ten. They also only allowed one field goal in the quarter to bring the lead to 35-6.

Sterling Baker had six of her thirteen points at the start of the second half. Winters never could get anything rolling against the Lady Cougars as the one field goal a quarter trend continued. The Lady Cougars increased their lead to 51-9.

The fourth quarter of the game was very defensive as both teams only managed to score a total of eleven points. The Lady Blizzards actually took the quarter as the game came to a close at 56-15.

Sterling Baker had 13 points. Allison Vaughn, Graci Jones and Kayce Jackson each finished with 10 points each.

Christoval (18-10, 6-0) needed help from rival Eldorado to clinch a playoff spot and got it, as they beat Ozona on Tuesday. The Lady Cougars host Ozona on Friday.

Winters (8-19, 0-6) will host Miles on Friday.

No. 3 Mason Clinches Playoffs with Win Over Rival No. 6 San Saba

The no. 3-ranked Mason Cowgirls overcame an early deficit and held off a late comeback to take down sixth-ranked San Saba 41-34 and clinch a playoff berth at home on Tuesday.

The win moved Mason's winning streak to 22 games.

Mason fell behind 10-9 after the first quarter, but remained within striking distance of San Saba thanks to four points from McKenzie Cano, a three-pointer from Tessa Guice and two points from Ruby Mangus.

The Cowgirls got hot to take a 23-20 lead at halftime behind five points from Presley Anastas, another three from Guice and four points from Mangus.

Mason's defense shined in the third, limiting San Saba to just three points as the Cowgirl's lead grew to 35-23 behind seven points from Mangus.

San Saba made a run in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points. But it wasn't enough, as Mason posted six points. Mangus had four of their six points in the final quarter.

Mason (29-1, 5-0) will be off this Friday before traveling to Harper on Jan. 29.

Second Half Defense Helps Ballinger Girls Cruise Past Grape Creek

The Ballinger Lady Bearcats held Grape Creek to just three points in the second half to cruise to a 43-9 win on Tuesday.

Ballinger could only grab an 11-6 lead after the first quarter. Kinlee Bowman got the Lady Bearcats off to a good start with seven points in the quarter. Janessa Escamilla helped keep Grape Creek close with four points.

The Lady Bearcats then turned to defense and held Grape Creek scoreless in the second quarter to take a 25-6 lead into halftime. Sydney Bowman posted nine points in the quarter for Ballinger.

Grape Creek would score their final points of the game on a three-pointer from Taigan Rivers in the third quarter. Ballinger would score seven more points and Rosemary Delgado hit a three-pointer to extend their lead to 32-9.

Kinlee Bowman had another nine points in the fourth quarter as Ballinger coasted to the finish line.

Because Reagan County beat TLCA, Ballinger was not able to clinch a playoff spot Tuesday night.

Ballinger (17-13, 7-1) will host Brady this Friday hoping to clinch a playoff spot.

Grape Creek (4-21, 0-8) travels to no. 1-ranked Wall this Friday.

No. 7 Garden City Routs Borden County to Clinch Playoff Spot

The no. 7-ranked Garden City Lady Bearkats booked their spot in the playoffs with a dominant 48-38 win over Borden County on the road Tuesday.

Garden City jumped out to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter behind Lindee Walker's eight points.

Ixchel Sotelo's four points highlighted an 11-point second quarter that lifted the Lady Bearkats to a 26-14 halftime lead.

Jordan Driver notched four points in a more subdued third quarter, yet Garden City still extended their lead to 34-18.

Allison Halfmann highlighted a 14-point fourth quarter with seven points to close out the game for Garden City.

Garden City (23-3, 5-0) will host Klondike this Friday.

Eden into Playoffs With Rout of Paint Rock

The Eden Lady Bulldogs booked their spot in the playoffs with a 59-16 rout of Paint Rock on Tuesday.

Behind a barrage of three-pointers and stellar defense, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a commanding 22-2 lead in the first quarter. Sofia Regalado, Marlee Odom and Emily Hemmeter each notched a three-pointer in the first quarter.

Regalado and Odom continued their hot streak by each hitting shots from distance and combining for 10 points to extend Eden's lead to 42-12 at halftime.

Eden continued to pour it on offensively and hold Paint Rock in check in the third quarter. Hemmeter and Emily Bunger combined for eight points to put Eden up 56-14 after the third quarter.

Paint Rock was again held to just two points in the fourth quarter and Regalado continued her phenomenal night with her third three-pointer of the game.

Regalado finished with a game-high 15 points.

Eden moves to 8-0 in District 12-1A. They'll host Lohn on Jan. 25.

Paint Rock falls to 3-6 in district play. Their next game is against Lohn on Jan. 29.
