Sonora Well-Represented in 2019 FCA All-Star Classic

 

SONORA, TX-- Six student-athletes from Sonora High School will get one more chance to represent their school after graduation at the 20th Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-Star Classic this summer.

In addition to selections in volleyball, football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball, Sonora head football coach and athletic director Jeff Cordell was selected as the head coach for the red team in the football all-star game to be played at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.

Mary Kyle Johnson was selected to the volleyball all-star game after guiding the Lady Broncos to a second straight district championship, the regional quarterfinal and a 25-15 record. The 2018 All-Concho Valley volleyball MVP was as dominant a force on the court, leading Sonora in kills (413), points (291) and blocks (73) en route to district MVP honors.

All-Concho Valley selection Hunter Bunch was picked to represent Sonora in the football all-star game. He was the anchor to Sonora's secondary with 155 total tackles and a pair of interceptions. That helped Sonora right their ship to get three straight wins to clinch a playoff spot.

Evan Shannon and Jackilyn Sykes were the representatives for the Bronco and Lady Bronco basketball teams. Both players have helped Sonora stay in playoff contention all year. The Lady Broncos are currently in third place in District 4-3A. The Broncos are currently in fourth place after four games in district play.

Representing the Lady Broncos on the softball diamond will be Danyse Cantu. She has been a starting pitcher for the Lady Broncos and featured a lot in the 2018 season for Sonora. She, along with Sykes, will likely be relied on to help the Lady Broncos make a run to a playoff berth in 2019.

Daniel Gonzales will represent the Broncos on the baseball diamond. Gonzales was instrumental in helping the Broncos surge to the District 4-3A play-in game after Sonora and TLCA finished tied for fourth place in district play.

The all-star games will take place June 7-8. The schedule is as follows:

June 7

  • 11 a.m.- Softball at Mayer Field, Angelo State University
  • 6 p.m.- Baseball at Foster Field at 1st Community Federal Credit Union Stadium, Angelo State University 

June 8

  • 12 p.m.- Volleyball at Abilene Wylie High School
  • 2 p.m.- Women's basketball at Brownwood Coliseum
  • 4 p.m.- Men's basketball at Brownwood Coliseum
  • 6 p.m.- Football at Shotwell Stadium, Abilene

The Big Country chapter of FCA covers all of Abilene, San Angelo, the Big Country and the Concho Valley. More area players could be announced to their respective teams later.
