HURST, TX-- The Central Lady Cats suffered their first loss in District 3-6A, a 39-34 decision against Hurst Bell, despite a late comeback effort on Friday.
Central held their own early on with the team regarded as the best in the district. Central and Bell were tied at seven after the first quarter.
Then, Bell opened the game up a little by outscoring Central 12-5 in the second to take a 19-12 lead into halftime.
The Lady Cats continued to stand their ground in the third quarter, only letting Bell's lead grow by three points at 30-20 after the third quarter.
Central found a groove in the fourth, putting up 14 points. However, it wasn't enough as Bell managed nine points of their own to hold on for the win.
The Lady Cats used their range to stay in the game, going 5-of-17 from behind the three-point line. Bell matched Central in that category by hitting five threes of their own.
Turnovers were a sore spot for Central, who committed 14 compared to nine turnovers from Bell.
However, senior Parris Parmer had the game-high scoring mark with 17 points. Six of Parmer's 17 points came from behind the three point line. Victoria Lopez also had a pair of threes for her six points on the night.
Bell's highly-touted junior forward Myra Gordon finished with 16 points. The 6-foot tall junior was 6-of-22 from the field with five rebounds as well.
Central (21-6, 5-1) will host Abilene Wylie in a non-district game on Tuesday, Jan. 15, before welcoming district foe Fort Worth Haltom to Babe Didrikson Gym on Friday.
Christoval Girls Stay Hot to Roll by Miles, Maintain Unbeaten District Record
The Christoval Lady Cougars maintained their red-hot form in a dominant 55-22 win over the Miles Lady Bulldogs at home on Friday.
Points came from everywhere in the first quarter for the Lady Cougars as they jumped out to a huge 19-3 lead that set the tone for the rest of the game.
Allison Vaughn dominated the first half by scoring eight points. Christoval’s defense continued to be too much for the Lady Bulldogs as they went into the half down 32-7.
No matter how much the Lady Cougars got up, their defense never lacked. They never gave up double digit points in a quarter, in this game. This continued into the third as they ended the quarter with a 47-14 lead.
The fourth quarter was competitive with the score being 8-7, but Miles never could fully chip away at Christoval’s lead.
Lauren Cabrera had the game-high marks in scoring with 14 points for Christoval. Vaughn finished with 12 points.
Freshman post Regan Smithwick had the team-high mark for Miles with six points.
Christoval (15-10, 3-0) will next travel to Forsan on Jan. 15.
Miles (5-11, 1-2) will look to bounce back against Eldorado on the road Jan. 15.
Robert Lee Starts Hot to Cruise Past Irion County
The Robert Lee Lady Steers pulled even with third place Water Valley with a comfortable 55-26 win over the Irion County Lady Hornets on Friday in District 11-1A.
Irion County started the scoring in the game with a basket from Kelcie Williams to go up 2-0. Robert Lee went on a 12-0 run to close out the quarter behind eight points and a pair of three pointers from Braylee Hood. The Lady Steers never looked back.
Megann Grantham and Kelby Clawson combined for eight points to help Robert Lee extend their lead to 25-9 at halftime. Hood added another five points to her name in the quarter, but was nowhere near done.
Robert Lee extended their lead by another 14 points in the third quarter during an 18-point explosion to go up 45-13. Hood posted nine more points for the Lady Steers.
Irion County found a rhythm late in the game and outscored the Lady Steers 13-10 in the final quarter behind seven points from junior Jadyn Miller. Hood added a pair of free throws to her name to close out the night and Julissa Ureno had four points to lead the way for Robert Lee in the final quarter.
Hood finished with a game-high 24 points for Robert Lee. Ureno and Clawson each finished with 10 points as well.
Miller and Williams had the team highs for Irion County with seven points each.
Robert Lee moves to 4-2 in district play with an idle period coming up on Jan. 15. They'll resume district play on Thursday, Jan. 17, with an away game at rival Bronte.
Irion County falls to 1-5 in district play with Bronte coming to Mertzon on Jan. 15.
No. 3 Mason Wallops Harper to Extend Winning Streak to 19
The no. 3-ranked Mason Cowgirls put a 76-37 beatdown on the Harper Lady Longhorns at home on Friday.
Mason's McKenzie Cano started the game hot. She had nine points in the quarter which really boosted her team to get a 20-9 lead going into the second quarter.
Mason’s offense did not let up in the second with them putting up another 20 points. Tessa Guice continued the scoring for the Cowgirls by putting up 10 points. This brought Mason’s lead to 40-22.
The Cowgirls came out in the second half with one goal in mind, and that was defense. They gave up zero points in the third without lacking on offense. That brought their lead to 58-22 entering the fourth quarter.
A lot of bench players got to play in the fourth quarter due to the huge lead. This led to Harper keeping up with Mason’s offense, but they ended up losing the contest 76-37.
Cano finished with a game-high 22 points for Mason. Courtney Hanscheck and Ruby Mangus each finished with 13 points for the Cowgirls.
Mason (26-1, 2-0) will travel to Junction on Jan. 15 looking to keep their hot streak going.
No. 7 Garden City Comes Back to Beat Sands, Take Sole Possession of First Place
The no. 7-ranked Garden City Lady Bearkats came back and held on for a narrow 25-23 win over Sands to take sole possession of first place in District 8-1A on Friday.
Points came at a premium in this game, with neither team scoring double figures in any quarter.
Garden City held a slim 7-4 lead after the first quarter, only to have Sands claim a 13-12 lead at the half.
The two teams held even in the third quarter with Sands clinging to a 19-18 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Four points from Lindee Walker and three free throws from the rest of the Lady Kats, along with holding Sands to four points, helped them take the lead late and eventually win.
Ixchel Sotelo had the game-high of nine points. Walker finished with eight points.
Garden City (22-3, 3-0) will host Grady on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
Johnson's Unconventional Double-Double Lifts Sonora to Dominant Win Over Grape Creek
Senior forward Mary Kyle Johnson picked up one of the more uncommon variations of the double-double as Sonora rolled Grape Creek 55-22 at home on Friday.
Johnson finished in double figures in points scored and steals to help the Lady Broncos get their 21st win of the season. Typically, double-doubles come from points and rebounds
Grape Creek was pesky early on, staying within 11-7 after the first quarter. Sonora's defense then shut them down in the second quarter to take control of the game.
The Lady Broncos outscored Grape Creek 15-0 in the second frame to take a 26-7 lead into halftime.
The Lady Eagles tried to cut into Sonora's lead, only being outscored 11-9 in the third quarter. But Sonora poured it on in the fourth by extending their lead by another 13 points thanks to an 18-5 margin.
Johnson finished with 18 points and 13 steals to lead the way for Sonora. Sophomore Skylar Harris was the only other Lady Bronco in double figures scoring with 13 points.
Sonora (21-5, 4-2) will host Brady on Jan. 15.
Grape Creek (3-19, 0-6) will look to snap their 10-game losing streak with a non-district matchup with Cornerstone Christian on Jan. 15. They resume district play next Friday at Brady
