EDEN, TX-- The first day of Eden's Concho Classic basketball tournament brought excitement to the hardwood of Concho County Thursday.
The Robert Lee Lady Steers kicked off the festivities with a dominant 63-21 win over TLCA in the tournament's first game. The Steers were then able to fend off the Sonora Lady Broncos for a 39-37 win. Those two wins put Robert Lee into the semifinals of the tournament.
The host Eden Lady Bulldogs were able to knock off Winters 56-42 and Bronte 53-44. Eden's two wins put them into Friday's semifinal against Robert Lee at 9 a.m. The winner will have the rest of the day off and await the winner of the loser's bracket to earn their place in Saturday's championship.
Prior to their loss to Eden, Bronte knocked off Grape Creek 33-24. Their loss to Eden set up a meeting with TLCA on Friday at 3 p.m.
Winters was able to bounce back following their first round loss and beat Grape Creek 39-26. That means they will play Sonora at noon on Friday.
Grape Creek's two losses put them in the consolation bracket of the tournament. They will have tomorrow off and wait for the loser of the game between Bronte and TLCA.
Rocha's 19 Points Lifts No. 1 Wall Past Seminole in Whataburger Tourney Opener.
The no. 1-ranked Wall Lady Hawks opened the nationally regarded Whataburger Tournament with a 53-41 win over Seminole.
The Lady Hawks used consistent scoring to down a streaky Seminole squad, despite allowing 17 points in the second quarter. Wall scored 13 points in the first quarter before scoring 16 points in each the second and third quarters.
Seminole struggled to handle Wall's Sam Rocha, as they gave the Lady Hawk post 11 free throws. Rocha converted nine attempts from the charity stripe en route to a team-high 19 points.
Her partners in crime, Jayden Fiebiger and Sawyer Lloyd each finished in double figures. Fiebiger finished with 16 points while Lloyd finished with 11 points.
Wall (15-1) will face Panhandle at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
