AREA GIRLS HOOPS: Sonora Fends Off Brady's Last-Second Shot

BRADY, TX-- An 11-1 run in the final two minutes was not enough for the Brady Lady Bulldogs in their District 4-3A opener against the Sonora Lady Broncos Tuesday night.

Sonora extended their win streak to 10 games with the 43-41 win which came down to the very last second.

After Brady jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the first, Sonora rode on the back of senior forward Mary Kyle Johnson, who scored five points during Sonora's 7-0 run to take the narrow lead. That margin would hold at 14-12 after the first quarter. Brady's Madi Boyd hit two three-pointers in that quarter as a sign of things to come.

The Lady Broncos then extended their lead to five at 29-24 before halftime thanks to an and-one by Mary Kyle Johnson. Boyd had two more three pointers to keep the score close heading into the break.

Out of the break, Boyd and the Lady Bulldogs jumped on Sonora in the first five minutes for a 6-0 run to take a narrow 30-29 lead. Boyd had four points during that run.

A free throw by Johnson tied the game at 30 in the latter stages of the third. Cheyenne Haynes hit a basket late to give Sonora the 32-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Broncos carried that momentum into the fourth by growing their lead to as many as 12 points. Brady then stormed back to within one point with their 11-1 run, mostly from six made free throws from Boyd.

However, Skyler Harris needed just one free throw to give Sonora their winning margin. Brady missed a last-second jump shot as time expired, giving Sonora the win.

Boyd finished as the game-high scorer with 24 points. Johnson led the Lady Broncos with 19 points.

Sonora (14-1, 1-0) will host Ballinger on Friday. Brady (3-5, 0-1) will travel to Grape Creek on Friday.

Lloyd Leads No. 1 Wall to Rout of Reagan County

The no. 1-ranked Wall Lady Hawks lived up to their ranking Tuesday night by routing Reagan County 69-11 to open District 4-3A.

Wall led 25-4 after the first quarter in a game that never close to begin with. Wall finished the game with eight players scoring with three notching double digits. Reagan County had just four on the score sheet.

After that first quarter, the Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Owls 18-3, 16-2 and 10-2 in the final three quarters.

Senior point guard Sawyer Lloyd finished as the game-high scorer with 17 points. She had two of Wall's three three-pointers in the game and 13 of those points came in the first half.

Sam Rocha finished right behind Lloyd with 16 points. Rocha exploded for eight points in the third quarter.

Wall (10-1, 1-0) gets a week of rest before hosting district rival Sonora on Dec. 18. Reagan County hosts TLCA on the same day.
