MERTZON, TX-- The Irion County Hornets have played their final season of 11-man football, according to multiple reports.
On Wednesday, Matt Stepp with Dave Campbell's Texas Football tweeted about the rumors of Irion County moving down. Head coach Lee Harvey confirmed the report to San Angelo Live after a tip by KIDY's Jerry Huerta.
Since they are in the middle of a realignment, the Hornets will play an outlaw schedule full of six-man games rather than playing in District 8-2A Division II as they did this year.
The Hornets struggled in 2018, going 2-8 overall and 0-5 in district play with a 59-0 loss to a beleaguered Menard team to close out the year. Those struggles and limited numbers of players were likely factors in the decision.
In 2017, the community held a vote whether or not to move to six-man football in the 2018 realignment. They voted to stay in the 11-man ranks.
Irion County already participates as a Class 1A school in every other sport.
