SAN ANGELO, TX-- Concho Valley teams enter week 9 of the high school football season this week.
In addition to Lake View and Reagan County, who are already in the playoffs thanks to four-team districts, Central, Christoval, Eldorado and Wall could each punch their ticket to the playoffs this week.
With teams looking to punch that ticket, save a season or improve their seeding for playoffs, here are the players to watch in week 9:
Wesley Dutton, Sr., WR/QB/DB, Sonora
Sonora's season is nearing dire straits, if not there already. The Broncos are in the middle of a five-game skid, an 0-2 to start district play and are currently on the outside looking in from fifth place with three weeks to go.
In week 8, Sonora came close to notching their first win in District 13-3A Division II. But Ingram Moore held off the Broncos comeback attempt.
The good news is the Broncos are just a game back of fourth place Johnson City with a chance to move into a playoff spot in week 9.
In order to get into the top four, Sonora has to handle Comfort (3-4, 1-1) this week.
If Sonora were to knock off Comfort on Friday, you could probably look to Dutton, a captain on the Sonora team, as the catalyst.
Dutton, who has seen more reps behind center, has accounted for 1,025 yards of total offense and 12 total touchdowns.
Last week, Dutton was 7-of-17 passing for 124 yards with no interception. The senior added 135 yards rushing and three touchdowns to his passing stats in the loss.
Korbin Covarrubiaz, Fr., QB, Eldorado
Korbin was thrown into the spotlight after his brother, Kevan, went down with an injury early in the season.
The freshman QB has handled the pressure well, helping guide the Eagles to a big, 48-0 win over Miles last week and a 2-0 start in District 8-2A Division II.
Covarrubiaz has accounted for 683 yards of total offense and nine total touchdowns in that time.
He will need to continue that play this week with another critical game on the horizon.
Eldorado (4-3, 2-0) faces Rocksprings (4-3, 1-1) this week. The fourth place Angoras are just a game back from Eldorado and Christoval at the top of the district standings.
A win for the Eagles would go a long way to clinching a playoff berth. They could clinch a berth on Friday night, but would need help in the form of a Menard loss to do so.
Note: We initially had Lake View junior Johnny Espinosa listed as a player to watch, but according to a tweet from the Lake View star, he will be out for the season.
