SONORA, TX-- A 14-point lead in the first half was not enough for the Sonora Broncos, who lost their homecoming game 27-21 to district foe Blanco.
Sonora jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a pair of touchdown runs by Wesley Dutton and Wilson Johnson. Brandon Martinez missed the first extra point before running up the middle for two points on the next.
Blanco matched the Broncos with a pair of explosive scoring plays in the second quarter. Cade Felps ran 44 yards to the end zone and Baylor Smith hurled a 50-yard touchdown pass to Walton Daves to tie the game up.
Out of halftime, Blanco picked up where they left off with Smith scampering 10 yards for the score to take 21-14 in the third.
Brian Van Winkle kept Sonora on Blanco's doorstep with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Johnson, tying the game at 21.
Blanco answered the only way they knew how with Smith running 54 yards to the end zone and giving Blanco the lead for good.
Van Winkle finished the day 25-of-44 passing for 282 yards and a touchdown. The senior QB also had 30 yards rushing on eight carries.
His favorite target was Wesley Dutton who had 131 yards receiving, 10 yards rushing and a touchdown in the loss.
Sonora (2-4, 0-1) travels to Ingram Moore next Friday.
