Week 5 Previews and Predictions: Will Wall Knock off 4A Foe? Can Lake View Win on Homecoming?

SAN ANGELO, TX-- Week 5 of high school football starts tonight in the Concho Valley with a few intriguing matchups.

Wall (1-2) hosts Class 4A Big Spring (2-2). Lake View (1-3) takes on Llano (3-1) in the Chief's homecoming game. And Central (3-1) begins play in District 3-6A on the road at Weatherford (2-2).

Here are some brief previews and predictions on area games in week 5.

Big Spring Steers (2-2) @ Wall Hawks (1-2); Friday, Sept. 28, 7:30 p.m.

Big Spring has seemingly turned things around following their 0-10 season last year.

Their offense has shown glimpses of what they could truly do through four games, putting up 98 points. They put up 33 against Sweetwater in week 2 and 39 against Pecos last week.

In that Sweetwater game, Big Spring held the Mustangs to just seven points.

However, Big Spring's production drops tremendously against good defenses. Against Midland Greenwood in week 1, Big Spring managed just 12 points. In week 3, the Steers posted 14 points in a 35-14 loss to Monahans.

Wall's defense stepped up in last week's win over Sonora. The Hawks held the Broncos' explosive offense to just 193 yards of total offense in that game. Joe Walker tallied 2.5 sacks to lead the Hawks.

That pressure could make this a monumental task for Big Spring

Wall's offense has also done well over the last two games. In their 35-34 loss to Midland Christian, the Hawks posted 501 yards of total offense. Last week, Wall posted 373 yards with most of it coming on the ground.

If Wall keeps their run game going behind senior Sutton Braden and their stable of backs, the Hawks should cruise to .500.

Llano Yellowjackets (3-1) @ Lake View Chiefs (1-3); Friday, Sept. 28, 7:00 p.m.

It's homecoming for Lake View, so the Chiefs will be hyped up for this game.

Despite a 1-3 record, the Chiefs still look good. Senior quarterback Kendall Blue has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards.

Blue has a solid receiving corps headlined by Ahmad Daniels, Adrien Villa, Johnny Espinosa and Matthew Chappa. That quartet has accounted for 670 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

However, Lake View is allowing roughly 35 points per game while scoring just 26 points on average. Llano is scoring 36 points per game and allowing just 17.

In their balanced offense, Llano has leaned on Cade Fly and Mason Brooks. Those two have posted 378 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Fly has also thrown for 677 yards and seven touchdowns.

Lake View will have another test this week.

Central Bobcats (3-1) @ Weatherford Kangaroos (2-2); Friday, Sept. 28, 7:30 p.m.

Central starts their stay in the Metroplex as District 3-6A play kicks off against a resurgent Weatherford team.

The Bobcats appear to be without four starters after a report stated they will be suspended for three games. With no official confirmation as to who is suspended, it's hard to say what kind of impact that will have on Central.

However, the Bobcats will hope to ride the upward trend of their sophomore QB Malachi Brown. Last week, Brown rushed for 218 yards on 19 carries for a pair of touchdowns. It was the first time a Bobcat rusher posted over 200 yards rushing since Maverick McIvor did so in week 4 of 2017 against Killeen Shoemaker.

The sophomore also added another 129 yards and one touchdown passing.

However, the more impressive thing was Central's defense. Behind Anthony Gonzales' three sacks and three turnovers, the Bobcats held an extremely explosive Pebble Hills team in check.

Central will need more stellar defensive play with quarterback Ken Seals lighting up the scoreboard for Weatherford.

If Central can get that push up front, expect them to thrive in this game.
