Central's Sophomore QB Earns San Angelo Live Player of the Week After Stellar Performance

SAN ANGELO, TX-- Players throughout the Concho Valley stepped up for their teams in Week 4 of the high school football season.

Week 2 player of the week Garrett Knight, of Bronte, posted 255 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns for the Longhorns in their mercy rule win over Santa Anna. Menard's senior RB Christian Salazar found a groove against Junction for 157 yards rushing with 3 touchdowns. And Wall's Sutton Braden, who won last week's honors, picked up where he left off with 160 yards rushing in their 40-20 win over Sonora.

However, one player stood out more than the others: Central's sophomore quarterback Malachi Brown.

After stepping in for senior Maverick McIvor, who's season ended in Week 2, and facing a stout Cedar Park team, Brown finally found his rhythm in the Bobcats 31-20 win over El Paso Pebble Hills.

The sophomore dual-threat QB rushed for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 19 carries. Brown had a 66-yard touchdown run to open the scoring for Central. He also scored on a 19-yard carry in the fourth quarter to go up 31-20. Brown almost had three, but fumbled near the goal line in the second quarter and Tanner Dabbert picked up the fumble for a Central touchdown.

It was the first time a Central player rushed for over 200 yards since McIvor posted 201 yards rushing against Killeen Shoemaker in 2017.

Through the air, Brown was 13 of 28 for 129 yards passing with 1 touchdown in Central's homecoming win.

Central head coach Brent Davis praised the young quarterback after the game for his poise in just his second start at quarterback. That poise, coupled with Central's stout defense, extended the Bobcats' regular season home winning streak to 25 games in a row.

The Bobcats now open District 3-6A play on the road at Weatherford this Friday.
