SAN ANGELO, TX-- Angelo State University's homecoming is two weeks away and the Alumni Association has announced their Alumni honorees for 2018.
A pair of San Angelo coaching greats were named to that list.
Current Central head coach Brent Davis was named the Distinguished Carr Scholar Alumnus and former Lake View head coach Jim Slaughter was named the Golden Ex of the Year.
Davis, a 1987 graduate of ASU, earned the honor, in part, for his work turning Central back into a West Texas power.
"It's a great honor," Davis said. "Anytime you get recognized by your alma mater, it's a big deal. I'm very appreciative of it. I love ASU...I've always loved San Angelo."
Prior to Davis' arrival in 2009, the Bobcats went 42-69 in the previous 10 years under four coaches with seven playoff appearances. Since then the Bobcats have gone 80-32 under Davis including nine consecutive playoff appearances and five straight district championships.
Davis had stints at Banquete, Sinton, Lewisville The Colony and Alice prior to his return to the Concho Valley. He boasts an overall record of 180-89-1 in 24 years of coaching.
Slaughter, who coached the Chiefs for nine years, is still highly regarded throughout the city for his time at Lake View.
Slaughter posted a 56-38 record during his tenure at Lake View. He was the last Lake View head coach to lead the Chiefs to an undefeated season.
The nine honorees will be honored at the Alumni Association's Honorees Dinner Friday, Oct. 12, in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center.
