SAN ANGELO, TX-- Forecasted heavy rain has already thrown a wrench into this week's games.
Five games have proactively moved their date to Thursday. Those games include Wall vs Sonora, Mason vs Jim Ned, Dublin vs Brady, Cross Plains vs Christoval and Rochelle vs Eden. It also could be possible that other games get moved to Saturday or canceled all together.
Despite the rain supposed to hit the Concho Valley, a plethora of good matchups are still set to take place this week.
Wall Hawks (0-2) vs Sonora Broncos (2-1); Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
The Wall-Sonora rivalry has played out since the pee-wee level.
The athletes know each other's capability well and that will show on the field Thursday night.
Both teams are coming off tough losses in week 3.
Wall almost erased a 21-point deficit on the road against Midland Christian. In that game, the Hawks had to use their passing game once again.
Mason Fuchs completed 8 of 17 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
However, the Hawks got their run game going thanks to Sutton Braden, who won San Angelo Live Player of the Week last week. The senior RB posted 218 yards on the ground with a pair of touchdowns. The next closest Hawk in the rushing category was Fuchs with 50 yards rushing.
Being able to rely on that and not fall behind is the key for the Hawks.
However, they have to deal with Sonora's high-powered offense.
Despite posting what will likely be a season-low 104 total yards of offense last week, the Broncos are still capable of lighting up the scoreboard.
Senior QB Brian Van Winkle is having a good year with 650 yards passing on 45 completed passes of 88 attempts. Van Winkle also has thrown nine touchdown passes.
Junior receiver Brock Aschenbeck has caught the most passes with 18 and senior Wesley Dutton leads the team in yards receiving with 268.
This game should be close due to the hard-fought nature of this rivalry.
Sonora 32, Wall 28
#1 Mason Punchers (3-0) vs Tuscola Jim Ned Indians (3-0); Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Both teams have been extremely good to start the season.
Mason has been better, much better as their no. 1 ranking suggests.
The Punchers, behind fullback Klay Klaerner and their stout defense, have dominated early on in 2018.
Mason has allowed just 27 points through three games. Those three games came against Class 3A opponents, including Wall and Sonora.
Klaerner has stepped up in each game with multiple 200-yard rushing performances against Sonora and Wall.
Jim Ned, however, may have the best offense Mason will see in the regular season.
The Indians are averaging 54 points per game to start the season.
Mason, however, should ride their defense to another big win against a bigger school.
Mason 31, Jim Ned 21
El Paso Pebble Hills Spartans (3-0) vs Central Bobcats (2-1); Friday, 7:00 p.m.
It's the final test for Central and their final chance to grow their young team.
Pebble Hills is much better than the team Central saw in the Bi-District round of playoffs last year.
Through three games against EP El Dorado, Chapin and Midland, the Spartans are allowing just north of 21 points per game while scoring an average of 40 per game.
Central's goal is to hold opponents under 30 points and nobody has been able to do that just yet. However, Central does have a tough defense led by linebacker Daylon Green and Jashon Hall.
They'll be looked to in order to stop Pebble Hills' loaded offense which is averaging roughly 518 yards per game.
Sometimes, the best defense is a good offense. Central will need their offense to get going in order to keep up with Pebble Hills.
Last week, Central scored just one offensive touchdown. That will not cut it as Central's schedule continues to get tougher.
Sophomore Malachi Brown will have to prove he has grown after last week's loss to Cedar Park and the offensive line will have to protect their QB so he has time to find his receivers.
If Central can get that offensive train rolling again, it could be a happy homecoming for the Bobcats.
Central 38, Pebble Hills 34
Baird Bears (2-1) vs Miles Bulldogs (2-1); Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs are off to a flying start in their first year under Charles Boles.
Senior RB Mason Bryan and the Bulldogs have started off the season 2-1 for the first time since 2015.
This Bulldog team is essentially scoring at will with an average of 49 points scored per game.
However, Baird is allowing just 15 points per game and could be one of the tougher defenses Miles sees.
But Miles boasts a tough defense, as well. They're allowing 18 points per game and will give Baird the toughest offense they've seen so far.
Expect Miles to best last year's win total on Friday.
Miles 42, Baird 21
