MASON, TX--(By Matt Trammell) The Mason Punchers knocked off the Sonora Broncos 27-0 in a monsoon at the Puncherdome on Friday.
Mason’s defense really stood out in the hard-fought game, holding Sonora to just 74 yards of total offense.
“We prepped for rain last week and it rained before the game; nothing in the game really,” said Mason head coach Kade Burns. “We’ve been telling the kids you can only control what you can control. You can control your effort, attitude and your execution.”
The game started off with troubles from the Broncos with a snap flying over the punter’s head before being recovered by Blake McLaughlin.
The Punchers made quick work of Sonora’s misfortune, scoring on a 3-yard run up the gut by quarterback Otto Wofford.
Mason was then set up at the 2 after a 33-yard run by Klay Klaerner. He would finish the day with 203 yards rushing with one touchdown.
Wofford would finish off that drive with his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from 2 yards out to put the Punchers up 14-0.
Mason rode Wofford for another touchdown before Klaerner put his on the board with a 20-yard run.
Wofford finished the day with 44 total yards of offense to go with his three scores. Jake Cockerham led the Puncher defense with a pair of sacks.
Brian Van Winkle was 10-of-23 passing on a quiet night for Sonora.
While the win will likely add to the momentum for the Punchers, they will not let it go to their heads. Burns said they’ll “take it one game at a time.”
“We have a pretty tough predistrict schedule,” Burns added. “But these games will really help us push through district.”
Mason (3-0) will square off with Tuscola Jim Ned, another 3A school, next Friday. Sonora (2-1) will host the Wall Hawks (1-1).
