SAN ANGELO, TX-- In week 1 of the Texas high school football season, Concho Valley teams went a combined 12-15.
Of the 27 teams in the area, 10 played each other in their opener.
As teams get set for their second games, here are previews and predictions of the games you should keep an eye on in week 2:
Central Bobcats (1-0) @ Del Rio Rams (0-1); Friday, Sept. 7, 7:30 p.m.
The Bobcat offense looked good, posting over 400 yards of offense once again in their 19-7 win over Shoemaker.
Their defense looked even better, limiting Shoemaker to just the one touchdown in the third quarter.
Daylon Green stepped up with 12 tackles for Central which earned him the team MVP honor for the week.
Redzone efficiency will be the focus for the Bobcats, though.
On Monday, head coach Brent Davis pointed out the self-inflicted errors and the emphasis on correcting those mistakes.
Doing that may be easier said than done against Del Rio.
Davis feels the Rams are better than they showed in their 45-7 loss to San Antonio Warren last week. Del Rio kept compounding errors and turnovers in that loss.
The tenth year head coach for the Bobcats noted that most teams experience their biggest growth from week 1 to week 2, so Central should expect a test on the border.
Central 42, Del Rio 14
Fabens Wildcats (1-0) @ Lake View Chiefs (0-1); Friday, Sept. 7, 7:00 p.m.
The Chiefs may have officially found their system.
In their 47-42 loss to Lamesa last week, the Chiefs trailed entering the fourth quarter before coming back and having a chance to win it at the end.
Senior Kendall Blue debuted well at quarterback in second year head coach Hector Guevara’s offense.
Blue threw for 332 yards, rushed for 29 and posted five total touchdowns.
Senior receiver Ahmad Daniels showcased his speed by catching six passes for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Fabens’ 49-12 win in week 1 is somewhat misleading, as well. That win came against Class 2A Division II Van Horn, who is expected to finish last in District 1-2A DII.
What isn’t misleading is the fact that Fabens will run the ball. Of their 525 total yards last week, 409 came on the ground.
Junior running back Jose Reyes gashed Van Horn for 205 yards and two touchdowns of 10 carries last week.
Lake View will need to showcase their run stopping ability in their home opener.
Lake View 35, Fabens 21
Cisco Loboes (1-0) @ Wall Hawks (0-1); Friday, Sept. 7, 7:30 p.m.
The Hawks learned a lot about their 2018 squad in their 27-21 loss to Mason last week.
One of those biggest lessons is they have a legitimate deep threat.
Junior quarterback Mason Fuchs went 7-of-13 passing for 206 yards in that loss. Coleman Coon was his favorite target, catching six passes for 151 yards and a touchdown.
Against Mason, Wall struggled to get the run game going. Fuchs’ arm allowed the Hawks to come back and tie that game on multiple occasions.
Don’t expect Wall to use the aerial attack much, but head coach Houston Guy will gladly use it to force defenses to play them honest.
Having Cisco play them honest could be a huge factor for the Hawks. The Loboes are coming off a 56-7 drubbing of Class 4A Sweetwater. The Loboes held the Mustangs to a miserly 209 yards on offense.
In that win, Cisco picked off three passes and forced one fumble. That means being able to keep the turnover count low will be a big focal point for Wall.
How do they keep that number low? Run the ball.
With their veer offense and Cisco’s stingy secondary, Wall will likely do just that with a smile on their face.
Wall 28, Cisco 24
Christoval Cougars (0-1) @ Grape Creek Eagles (0-1); Friday, Sept. 7, 7:30 p.m.
Both teams suffered tough losses to open the season.
Grape Creek was blanked 30-0 by Class 2A Division II foe Baird, while Christoval, also 2A DII lost 34-15 to Harper, a 2A DI team.
For the Eagles, that result could be the product of installing a new offense. The Eagles decided to go back to the ground and run the triple option out of the pistol formation.
They’ll bank on their speed once the operation starts running smoothly, which could be in week 2.
Christoval saw some good things in their loss to Harper.
They were balanced, running 25 run plays and 17 pass plays.
Sophomore quarterback Brayden Wilcox completed 52% of his passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.
However, Christoval’s gunslinger was picked off three times.
Limiting turnovers will be the focus for the Cougars.
Grape Creek 35, Christoval 34
