SAN ANGELO, TX-- One new addition to San Angelo Live’s sports coverage is the weekly recognition of the best player in the Concho Valley.
Each week, the San Angelo Live sports team will decide on the Jim Bass Ford Player of the Week.
Jim Bass Ford supports recognition of outstanding athletic achievement, but in no way influences the selection of the player of the week.
This week’s Jim Bass Ford Player of the Week honors go to Mason’s junior fullback Klay Klaerner.
The 5-foot-9, 185-pound back was instrumental to the Puncher’s mammoth win over Class 3A Wall in week 1.
Klaerner carried the ball 18 times for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. With a 15-yard reception, the junior finished with 197 total yards of offense.
The bruising back was able to regain the lead and momentum for the Punchers with an 85-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to put Mason up 21-14.
The Punchers (1-0) will host another 3A school, Johnson City (0-1), at the Puncherdome this Friday.
Johnson City lost 53-6 to Class 2A San Saba on Friday.
