HONDO, TX-- The Sonora Lady Broncos traveled to Hondo on Friday, where they handed the Lady Owls their first loss on the year in a five set thriller.
Head coach Judi Harris called the moment “bittersweet,” because she helped build the program at Hondo and knew their girls well. The game also took place in the new gym at Hondo, which, mixed with the Lady Owl’s undefeated record gave a state championship feeling to the game in Harris’ eyes.
Sonora dropped the first and third sets 25-22 and 25-13.
The second set proved to be tough, but Sonora squeezed by for a 25-23 set win. In the fourth and fifth sets the Lady Broncos mirrored that result, winning 25-23 in the fourth and 16-14 in the fifth.
Junior Brae Harris was stellar offensively, recording 12 kills and 13 assists to lead the way for the Lady Broncos. Senior Mary Kyle Johnson wasn’t far behind with 10 kills to her credit.
However, Johnson led the way with three blocks to her name.
Hondo struggled to find a way around Raeven and Camille Harris, who each had over 20 digs.
The Lady Broncos improve to 5-8 and will face Johnson City on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
