COLLEGE STATION, TX-- The Sonora Bronco and Brady Bulldog 7 on 7 teams kicked off the 2018 Texas State 7 on 7 football championships on Thursday.
Both teams are competing in the Division III bracket, which was just implemented by the Texas 7 on 7 Organization this year, and qualified from the Sonora State Qualifying Tournament.
Sonora, out of Pool G, went 3-0 on Thursday, outscored opponents 127-33 and claimed the top spot in their pool. Brady, out of Pool O, went 1-2 to take third place in their group.
The Broncos started off their tournament campaign with a dominant 52-6 result over Louise, a coastal school between Houston and Corpus Christi.
In their second game, Sonora was able to exact a little bit of revenge with a 31-20 win over Childress, who knocked them out of the playoffs in 2017.
The Broncos would cap off pool play with an emphatic 44-7 win over state power Bremond.
Brady’s campaign got off to good start with a narrow 27-26 win over Deweyville, but the Bulldogs suffered losses in their next two games with a 25-7 result against Hearne and a 40-34 defeat to Palmer.
In the single-elimination bracket, Sonora will face Deweyville while Brady will face Childress on the other side of the bracket. Both games will start at 8 a.m. on Friday.
Three wins for both teams would put them into the final against each other with a fourth win giving one of them a state title. Tentative game times for tomorrow in Division III, following the 8 a.m. game, are 10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., where a champion will be crowned. The Division I and Division II championship games are scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
No other Concho Valley teams are in the tournament, but Abilene High, one of Central’s district opponents in 2018, Abilene Cooper, Brownwood and Tuscola Jim Ned are teams within a 100-mile radius that made it to the tournament.
Alpine, a member of Reagan County’s district, also made it to College Station.
