Mason Wins First Lone Star Cup; Wall Finishes Second in 3A

AUSTIN, TX-- The University Interscholastic League announced the six winners of the 2017-18 Lone Star Cup on Friday.

The Lone Star Cup is a competition where schools are awarded points for performance in UIL-sanctioned events such as sports, marching band and One Act Play.

Mason High School was the only team in the Concho Valley to take home first place honors with their Class 2A victory.

Mason, who enjoyed dominant seasons in seemingly every sport, scored 70 points to best reigning cup champion Sundown (67).

The Mason Puncher baseball and football teams made deep runs in the playoffs. The Puncher baseball team made it to the Regional Semifinals before losing to eventual State Champion Dallardsville Big Sandy. The Puncher football team went to the Regional Final in 2017 where they lost to Refugio 38-14.

Mason also had eight athletes compete in the State Tennis Championships where they won everything except the girls singles title.

Off the field, Mason finished as the first runner-up at the Class 2A One Act Play meet.

Wall High School, the defending cup champs in 3A, finished second behind, you guessed it, Brock. The Hawks and Lady Hawks scored 66 points this season while Brock scored 86. Wall and Brock met in the playoffs in baseball and football with the Eagles taking both matchups.

The Lady Hawks made it to the third round of the basketball playoffs before losing to Lubbock Roosevelt. The Lady Hawk softball team also went to the third round of the softball playoffs where they lost to Alpine in a record-breaking three-game series.

The Hawk's boys doubles team of Colton Chitsey and Shawn LaBedell won state in tennis this year. The duo was the only one from Wall to represent the Hawks in the State Tournament.
