ABILENE, TX-- The no. 11-ranked Wall Hawks claimed an Area Championship with a series sweep of the Slaton Tigers at McMurry University.
The Hawks run ruled Slaton in both games, taking the first game on Friday 10-0 and the second by a score of 13-0 on Saturday.
Senior Dryden Virden took to the hill for the Hawks in game one and continued his scorching hot form. The Weatherford College-bound senior threw another complete game shutout and allowed just one hit in the six inning game on Friday. The six inning shutout extends Virden’s shutout streak to 19 innings over the last four games for the Hawks.
The Hawks scored eight runs across the first three innings in game one before going quiet across the fourth and fifth innings.
Charlie Mascorro gave the Hawks the walk-off, run-rule victory on a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Virden and Gage Weishuhn led the way for the Hawks in game one by going 3-for-4 at the plate. Virden had one RBI and Weishuhn had one run scored.
Brock Rosenquist, Tanner Seider and Mascorro each drove in a team-leading two RBIs for the Hawks in their game one victory.
The Hawks will face a familiar foe in Idalou in the Class 3A Region I Quarterfinals. The Hawks and Wildcats squared off in the Snyder Tournament in early March.
