"Half Day Sick Day" Declared by ASU Head Coach Ahead of Rivalry Clash in Regionals

SAN ANGELO, TX-- If you need an excuse to get out of work today, the Angelo State University softball coach has the perfect one for you.

“Tomorrow is a half day sick day beginning at noon,” head coach Travis Scott tweeted to San Angelo. “Then get to Mayer field for ASU vs [West Texas A&M] regional tournament game.”

The tweet came after the no.6-ranked Rambelle softball team defeated Colorado Christian University 8-2 in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament on Thursday.

Rambelle sophomore Karina Rocha highlighted the offensive production of the Rambelles in the game with a grand slam in the second inning. Senior Madison Greenwell went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs from a single prior to Rocha’s bomb to give the Rambelles the lead.

Former Lake View Maiden Amanda Ramage capped off the scoring in the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field.

Senior Morgan Hill improved her record to 23-4 this season in four innings of relief for Brandy Marlett. The duo combined for six strikeouts in the game with Marlett punching out four batters and Hill striking out two.

The ASU/West Texas A&M rivalry is one with no love lost and one that extends past the diamond into the stands with both fan bases packing the stadium and trading chants, cheers and the occasional boo.

The Rambelles currently lead the season series against the Lady Buffs 3-1. The Rambelles took two out of three games in Canyon in mid-March and knocked off the Lady Buffs in the Lone Star Conference to win the Lone Star Conference tournament last week in San Angelo.

A win would put the two-seeded Rambelles into the South Central Regional Tournament Final on Saturday. A loss means the Rambelles would play again at 7 p.m. today in an elimination game against either Colorado Christian or Cameron University.

The winner of this South Central Regional Tournament will face the winner of the South Central Regional Tournament hosted by Colorado Mesa University of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

First pitch for the Rambelle’s game today is slated for 2 p.m. at Mayer Field.
