SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Texas Tech Red Raiders extended a scholarship offer to Central's quarterback Maverick McIvor on Monday.
McIvor announced the offer via his personal Twitter just before 10 a.m. Monday morning.
The offer marks the first Big 12 offer that Central's quarterback has received and means McIvor now has an offer from representatives in each of the Power 5 conferences of NCAA Division I football.
Much like Washington State coached by Mike Leach, Texas Tech, coached by Kliff Kingsbury who played under Mike Leach at Tech, runs an Air-Raid offense in which many people think McIvor would thrive as a collegiate athlete.
Texas Tech has been known for its quarterbacks ever since Mike Leach's stay at the school on the plains. The latest prodigy, Patrick Mahomes, was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the tenth overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. Along with Mahomes, Tech has produced players like former Green Bay Packer Graham Harrell and current TCU Co-Offensive Coordinator Sonny Cumbie among other names.
The offer is McIvor's tenth after a stellar junior season where he tallied 52 total touchdowns and 4,300 yards of total offense to propel Central to an 11-1 record and fifth straight district title.
The 6-foot-3 quarterback has been weighing his options and will likely continue to do so into the summer where he is slated to go to multiple competitions.
The Texas Tech coaching staff is familiar with Central athletes.
Former Bobcats Eli and Henry Howard are currently a part of the Red Raider football team. Eli played his first season for Texas Tech last season after transferring from North Texas. The 6-foot-4 defensive linemen registered 27 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2017. His brother Henry was redshirted in his freshman year last year.
The Bobcats will continue their spring practices before concluding them with their annual spring game at San Angelo Stadium on Friday, May 18, at 6 p.m.
