KILLEEN, TX-- The Central Lady Cat softball team moved one step closer to a second-consecutive playoff berth with three games left in 2018. A year ago, the Lady Cats made the postseason for the first time in school history
The Lady Cats (15-10-2, 8-3) exploded offensively to down the Killeen Lady 'Roos 16-1 in four innings in Killeen on Friday in order to move three games in front of Killeen Harker Heights in fifth place and three-and-a-half games in front of sixth-place Killeen Shoemaker.
Sydnie Gilbert led the Lady Cats with four RBIs on a night where she went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored as well.
Emily Sanchez notched a two-run dinger over the center field wall in the top of the third inning of this game. The long ball was Sanchez' only hit in three official at-bats, although she did score three runs.
Freshman Bailey Fulps went the distance for Central, allowing one run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Harker Heights defeated Killeen Ellison 14-7 on Friday to improve to a 5-6 record in District 8-6A and move into sole possession of fifth place for the time being. The Lady Cats own the tie-breaker with Harker Heights in head-to-head competition with Central sweeping the season series.
The team the Lady Cats have to worry about is Shoemaker. Their game at Copperas Cove was suspended around 7 p.m. in the bottom of the fourth inning due to thunderstorms sweeping across the CenTex region. Shoemaker trails 6-5 in that game. With the game being in the bottom of the fourth inning, it could be counted as a full game since it has passed the three-and-a-half inning mark. There is no word on if the game has been called off. The Lady Cats beat Shoemaker 12-5 on the road on March 23 and still have one game to play against the Lady Wolves. Shoemaker, trailing by three-and-a-half games, must win out in order to challenge the Lady Cats for a playoff spot. A Shoemaker loss in any of their final games means the Lady Cats will be in the postseason.
Central next faces second-place Belton on Friday, April 13, at 6 p.m.
