BALLINGER, TX- -The Ballinger Lady Bearcats fell 8-0 at home to the Wall Lady Hawks in District 4-3A softball action on Friday.
“It was great that we rallied. Ballinger they’re tough and they are a good team,” said Wall Lady hawks Head Coach Steve Bain. “We battled in that [5th] inning and found ways to score some runs. That was huge for us.”
The win also gives the Lady Hawks sole possession of first place in the district while Ballinger falls into a two-way tie for second place.
After an uneventful first inning the lady Hawks put up three runs in the second inning to go up 3-0.
Kenzee Smith got things going with a fly-ball single to right field and would score on a ground ball single to center field by Taylor Hunt to put Wall up 1-0.
After a pop fly single to second, Kandace Aguilar would score on an error by Ballinger second baseman Grace Rutledge.
Hunt would eventually come around to score on a hard hit single to the shortstop by Payton Box making it 3-0 Wall.
In the bottom half of the third inning Wall retired three Ballinger batters in a row on three pop outs.
The Lady Bearcats had a chance in the bottom of the fourth inning to get a run across the plate but stranded a runner on base to end the inning.
Wall’s Hunt reached again in the fifth on an error to right field and Box got on after a walk, but Ballinger’s Kenzie Sanchez got Ballinger out of the inning after coming in to relieve Daniella Luna.
The Lady Hawks poured in five more runs in the sixth to go up 8-0. Smith and Lexi Valles scored on errors while Hunt drove in pinch runner Bazleah Higgins and later on would score on an error along with Izzy Vera.
Hunt went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Smith was the only other Lady Hawk with a multi-hit game in a 2-for-4 performance and two runs scored. Vera didn’t register a hit, but drove in two runs and scored one herself.
Lauren Jalomo, Elyssa Korn, Daniella Luna and Kelsey Hughes made up the four hits Ballinger recorded in the game.
Vera came out with the win after holding Ballinger scoreless on four hits while Luna took the loss for the Lady Bearcats after allowing three runs on five hits.
When speaking of Vera Coach Bain stated, “She was focused, she was zoomed in. She was one today and if she’s like that, she’s tough.”
Wall (12-4, 3-0) will face Reagan County ( on the road on March 27 at 5 p.m. Ballinger (13-8, 3-1) will face TLCA away in a district game on March 27 at 5 p.m.
