Irion County's Waddell Resigns for Dumas Gig, Leaving Vacancy at Underrated Program

MERTZON, TX-- Irion County Athletic Director and Head Coach David Waddell turned in his resignation yesterday after four years at the helm of the Hornets.

Waddell has accepted the Offensive Coordinator position at 4A school Dumas in the panhandle.

The Irion County ISD School Board will meet on Monday, March 19, to likely accept Waddell's resignation.

Waddell posted a 16-26 mark during his four year stint in Mertzon which included the first playoff berth in 14 years for the Hornets in 2017.

With the returning group of 12 from 2017 which includes incoming senior quarterback Nathan Chacon, the Irion County vacancy is one where the new head coach will likely see some success in 2018.

Only two seniors leave from the Irion County offensive line, according to the roster on MaxPreps.

The Hornets will be in District 8-2A Division 2 with Christoval, Eldorado, Menard, Miles and Rocksprings.

Christoval, Irion County, Menard, Miles and Rocksprings all made the playoffs in 2017.
