LUBBOCK, TX-- The Central Bobcats fell 11-6 to Denton High School in a slugfest Friday afternoon.
Denton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Brooks Bedinger came around to score from second after Central pitcher Micheal Cruz committed an error on a ground ball from Parker Smith.
Cruz would then load the bases in the third inning before hitting Bedinger with a pitch and walking Smith to extend Denton's lead to 3-0.
The Bobcats would narrow the deficit to 3-1 with an RBI single by Oscar Nino to score Nixon Brannon in the top of the fourth.
The two teams would then explode for a combined 13 runs in the fifth inning.
Central would plate five runs and briefly take the lead in the away half of the fifth inning.
Rance Rosas, Blake Mikeska and Cole Nelson would each tally RBIs in the inning. Mikeska came in on his own before Nelson drove in Brannon and Hayden Stevens on a lined double to left field to give Central a 6-3 lead.
That lead was short lived as Denton plated eight in the bottom of the fifth inning to go ahead for good.
Cruz threw four innings of one-hit baseball allowing three runs on the mound for Central. Spencer Burress came on in relief of Cruz and allowed eight runs on five hits to get charged with the loss.
Central is now 1-2 in their 2018 campaign. They'll play Little Elm at 1:00 pm and Lubbock Cooper at 4:00 pm on Saturday.
