SHALLOWATER, TX-- The second-ranked Wall Hawks opened up the Shallowater Tournament with two run-rule victories over Perryton and Hereford on Thursday. The win over Hereford included a combined no-hitter from two Wall pitchers
In the first game, against Perryton, the Hawks drubbed their opponent 12-2 in six innings.
After Caleb Heuertz set down the side to start the game, Tanner Seider knocked a double before Dryden Virden drove him in with a home run on a 1-1 count to make it 2-0 Wall in the first.
The Hawks used a four-run fourth and five-run fifth to extend their lead to 11-2 through five frames.
Junior Gage Weishuhn led the way for the Hawks going 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs in the first game.
Heuertz was credited with the win after going four full innings, hurling six strikeouts and allowing two runs on three hits. Sutton Hurst came on in relief in the fifth inning allowing just one walk in his relief duties.
Mitchell Horton would end the game with an RBI single to score Diebitsch from second in the sixth inning.
The second game would follow much of the same motif as the first with the Hawks using a big, seven-run third inning to power their way past Hereford 13-1 in five innings. The Hawks used the duo of Virden and Weishuhn to throw a combined no-hitter in the shortened game. Virden struck out 13 and Weishuhn struck out three. Wall allowed the one run after a batter reached on a passed ball, a sacrifice bunt, a stolen base and sacrifice fly.
Virden helped his cause by starting the seven-run rally in the third inning by driving in Brock Rosenquist and Seider on a fly ball that was dropped by the Hereford right fielder to give Wall a 4-1 lead.
Weishuhn drove in three runs with an inside the park home run to make it 7-1 in the very same inning. Charlie Mascorro and Coleton Saverance each tallied RBI singles in the third inning, as well.
With the two wins the Hawks improve to 3-0 on the young season and will play Denver City at 9:00 am and Levelland at 3:00 pm on Friday in the Shallowater Tournament.
