SNYDER, TX— The third-ranked Lady Hawks were on the losing end of a 42-37 defensive struggle in double overtime at an electric Snyder Coliseum against Lubbock Roosevelt in the third round of the regional girls basketball playoffs.
"It was a playoff game," Lady Hawk Head Coach Tate Lombard said of the atmosophere. "For us, we had a good crowd. I appreciate our fans coming out and supporting us."
The Lady Hawks trailed 17-13 going in to the second half after being held to just three points in the second quarter.
The Lady Hawks would trail by as many as eight points before storming back with Sawyer Lloyd and Jayden Fiebeiger to tie the game at 28 to force overtime.
"We have a really tough group," Lombard said. "I was proud of the way we fought. I didn't feel like we played our best at times. Credit to Lubbock Roosevelt. They're playing well and they're a really tough team and they made the plays when they needed to. We just kind of fell short a little bit."
Lloyd sparked the Lady Hawk's rally by draining a three-pointer and capitalizing on a Roosevelt turnover with a layup to cut the deficit to just three points with 2:19 left on the clock.
"Sawyer's a tough player," Lombard praised. "I mean, she's been through some of these battles before and we've come away with wins. This time it wasn't the case. I'm proud of all of our kids just the way they played and the way fought."
A missed free throw gave the Lady Hawks a chance to tie it up and Fiebeiger would put a second chance bucket in after a missed layup by Lloyd.
The two teams could not settle things in the first overtime so they went to a second overtime tied at 36.
Things remained close for most of the second overtime, but Roosevelt would pull away thanks to unforced errors to ultimately win the game.
"With it being as close as it is, you look at every play," Lombard said of the missed opportunities from the errors. "There's plays that probably were not made in the first quarter that impacted the rest of the game. We just didn't execute well enough to win a game like this. That's something we've got to learn and get better from. Hopefully the returners do a good job of remembering that going forward."
Fiebeiger led the way with 14 points for Wall. Sam Rocha finished as the Lady Hawk’s second leading scorer with 11 points on the night.
The Lady Hawks finish the season 26-6 overall and will only lose two seniors, Landry Oliver and Kelsey Powers, to graduation this year.
