SAN ANGELO, TX-- When the UIL announced the 2018-2020 realignment, some schools felt they got the short end of the deal. Not the coaches in District 8-2A Division 2.
"Everyone is happy," said Miles Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Chad Currie. "In the past we've had Albany and Iraan who have a lot of tradition. It's a competitive district. We've all played each other before. Usually we're each other's non-district games. [The new alignment] was slightly unexpected. That's what's fun about realignment."
District 8-2A Division 2 is made up of Christoval, Eldorado, Menard, Miles, Irion County and Rocksprings. Menard and Miles played each other twice in 2017 with Menard winning both contests.
"Rocksprings is the one school that we were surprised about," said Otho. "I know they lost Leakey in their district so I don't know if that played a factor in [alignment]."
The coaches for District 8 had it worked out where some of them would play each other in non-district before the new districts were announced.
"My first thought was I've got to find more games, I've got to get on the phone and fill our schedule," said Currie with a slight chuckle.
"I had to find three new non-district games," Otho said. "Those three turned in to district games."
The entire district will have a bye week in week six before starting district play this upcoming season.
"It's nice, but none of us get to scout each other that week," Otho laughed.
