San Angelo Western Intermediate 50/70 All Star team Headed to State Tournament
SAN ANGELO, TX – A baseball team from San Angelo is going to the state tournament for the first time since the 1990’s. San Angelo Western Intermediate 50/70 All Star team will play in the state tournament in Abilene Thursday.
According to team spokesperson Shona Ramos, Intermediate 50/70 is for players ages 11-13 and is the division between Majors and juniors. The number 50 is the pitching distance and 70 is the base distance.
Ramos says they are raising money for the historic trip to state, “we will be looking to fundraise.”
The baseball team consists of twelve players, Konnor Barnes, Cayden Box, Ty Casey, Jakob Charles, Dominic Garcia, Ethan Green, Kayden Hameister, Darren Lewallen, RJ Moreno, Stryler Price, Richie Ramos, and Jacob Saldivar. They are coached by Shawn Box, Nick Barron, and Luke Green.
The team advanced through district play as there were no other 50/70 all star teams in District 4 to compete against. Western won their 1st round at the Section 3 tournament against a San Antonio 5 Diamonds team 22-2. They faced another San Antonio team from Greater Helotes in the second round and won 11-6. Western won the Section 3 tournament Sunday evening beating the Greater Helotes team again 17-0.
