The first-ever CityFit 5K on Thursday night raised more than $2,500 to support Art in Uncommon Places’ effort to place quarter-mile markers along the new Red Arroyo Trail.
A cooperative effort that involved the City of San Angelo, Community Health Club and the San Angelo Road Lizards, the fun run/walk drew 159 participants.
“We had a terrific turnout, celebrated some great athletes and made a long-lasting investment in our community’s wellness as we finalize the Red Arroyo Trail,” said Budget Manager Morgan Chegwidden, who heads the City’s Working on Wellness committee. “The CityFit 5K will be back next year and we’ll definitely be looking to grow it.”
The 5K course began at Unidad Park and followed the 14-foot-wide Red Arroyo Trail to Sherwood Way. The 4-mile trail’s construction, which is nearing completion, is a joint effort between the Texas Department of Transportation and the City of San Angelo. It will link two of San Angelo’s busiest thoroughfares – Sherwood Way and Knickerbocker Road – with a cement path capable of accommodating walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters and other non-motorized means of transportation and recreation.
Anthony Wilson, the City’s public information officer, finished first overall in the 5K with a time of 20:00. Dean Martin finished second and Mike Buck third.
Rachel Wood, a permit technician in the City’s Building Permits and Inspections division, was the top overall female with a time of 23:53. Wood was followed by Tiffany McClintock in second and Carlee Price in third.
All six of the top finishers in the one-mile run had City ties.
Lance Templin, Wilson’s stepson, was the overall winner followed by Bryce Bunnell, the son of Finance Director Tina Carriger, in second. Assistant City Manager Rick Weise was the third overall male. Among the females, Anna James was the top finisher; she is the daughter of City Attorney Theresa James and Planning and Development Director Jon James. Gracie Wilson, Wilson’s daughter, was second followed by Julie White, daughter of Parks and Recreation Director Carl White.
