San Angelo Police Chief Travis Griffith Press Conference July 5th, 2024

SAN ANGELO, TX— San Angelo Police Chief Travis Griffith held a press conference today, July 5, 2024, to address the arrest of a San Angelo police officer over the Fourth of July Holiday.

The San Angelo Police Department released the following information regarding the arrest.

Information released said that just after 12:56 a.m. on Friday, July 4, 2024, San Angelo Police Detective James Hernandez, 54, was booked into the Tom Green County Jail for Driving While Intoxicated 2nd by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

A Trooper with the Texas DPS conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was being driven by Detective Hernandez which resulted in his arrest for the charge of Driving While Intoxicated 2nd. Further inquiries regarding the arrest should be directed to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Subsequent to this arrest, the San Angelo Police Department has opened a formal internal investigation with the Office of Professional Standards.

Hernandez, a seventeen-year veteran of the San Angelo Police Department, was off duty when the incident occurred.
