Rotary Flags for Heroes Display Opens Ahead of Veterans Day Parade

SAN ANGELO, TX — Seventy-two American flags honoring local heroes began flying Friday on the Tom Green County Courthouse lawn as part of the San Angelo Rotary Club’s Flags for Heroes display, which continues through Nov. 14 and includes the city’s Veterans Day events.

Mason Brooks, past president of the San Angelo Rotary Club, said community members and businesses sponsor individual flags, each featuring a medallion with the name of a chosen hero. Sponsors may honor military service members, first responders, educators, Scouts and Scoutmasters, parents, mentors or any person they consider a personal hero. Some of those honored are still living; others are remembered.

The display is a fundraiser supporting the club’s Top Scholars Banquet, held each spring to recognize the top 25 seniors from Central High School and Lakeview High School. Brooks credited current club President Vicki Terrill and member Kent Teague, who brought the idea from a Rotary club in Corpus Christi, for organizing the effort. He also thanked Tom Green County commissioners for allowing use of the courthouse lawn.

The San Angelo Rotary Club marks its 100th year in 2026. Information is available on the club’s Facebook page. The club meets Fridays at noon at Luigi’s Italian restaurant.

The flags will remain in place during the 23rd annual San Angelo Veterans Day Parade, scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The parade begins at the intersection of Irving Street and Concho Avenue, proceeds through downtown and ends at Randolph Street and Concho Avenue. Organizers have scheduled a detour at the intersection of Chadbourne Street and Harris Avenue; the route will turn onto Harris Avenue rather than continuing to College Avenue before rejoining the regular path at Irving Street and Harris Avenue.

This year’s parade theme commemorates the 85th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The attack killed 2,403 Americans, wounded 1,178 and damaged or destroyed numerous U.S. ships and aircraft, prompting the United States to enter World War II the following day.

Veterans Day is observed Wednesday, Nov. 11.
