SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo ISD will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Friday, Nov. 13, to mark the beginning of major improvements to Central High School funded through the district's voter-approved Bond 2025 program.
The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. near the Sarah Bernhardt Theater at Central High School. District leaders, students, staff and community members are invited to attend.
The planned improvements include a new auditorium, dining commons, gymnasium, locker rooms and Career and Technical Education (CTE) facilities.
Originally built in 1957, Central High School serves more than 2,500 students across a 40-acre campus. Many of the school's original buildings remain in use nearly 70 years later, and the campus has not received a major capital investment in more than 16 years, according to the district.
District officials said the improvements are intended to address aging facilities, limited capacity and the needs of the school's growing academic, fine arts and athletic programs.
One of the largest projects is a new dining commons designed to accommodate more students during lunch periods.
The existing cafeteria has a capacity of approximately 275 students, while the new dining commons is planned to serve approximately 865 students across three lunch periods.
The bond-funded projects will also provide updated facilities for fine arts, athletics and career and technical education programs.
The Central High School improvements are part of San Angelo ISD's Bond 2025 program, which voters approved to address aging district facilities and improve learning environments.
The groundbreaking will mark the beginning of the first phase of the school's long-term campus improvements.
The ceremony is open to community members, families, alumni and other supporters.
Guest parking will be available in the parking areas in front of Tucker and at Mini Main. The ceremony will take place near the Sarah Bernhardt Theater.
